Question Help with Carb and Torque Converter

Ok Guys,

I have 2 parts left to source for my build. I need to select a torque converter and a carb. Here is what I am working with.
• 69 455 block .30 over
• Flat top pistons
• 10:1 compression
• Estimated 425hp/510tq
• C heads
• Performer Intake
• TH400 with shift kit
• 12 bolt posi with (2:73) gears
• W&Z Manifolds with 2.5 dual exhaust
• Cam was put in the motor by original owner and only specs I have is a (280) cam… No other info. I did have the specs but do not have them as I lost the email.

I chose the 2:73 gears as the convertible is a cruiser and I just wanted to upgrade the drivability and power plant but not tear things up. I will not take it to the track just wanted a nice cruiser that would still be fun to drive stop light to stop light. Hope the freeway gears still provide some fun 

I will also need to do the driveline (since the rear is a Cheb would a stock SS driveline work?) If so anyone have the specs as maybe I can get lucky and find one instead of 2-300 to modify mine

Thank you all in advance...

I know everyone here will jump on the QJET band wagon, I would bolt a Holley 650 spread bore with vacuum secondaries on that. With that gear that carb will work very well, I had almost the same set up in a 68 Buick Rivera back in the late 70's, that tank hauled *** on the interstate and got 18MPG. Loved that car my wife fit a frozen snow bank and totaled it.

^^ maybe I'm missing some dark secret but Rochesters have proven as an evil nemesis to me. They are fiddly to adjust and I've never heard any amazing things about 'em. I'm speaking from experience nothing really factual.

I now know and love Edelbrocks. Whatever that beast can handle in CFM they have a reasonably priced flavor that often works well out of the box. Based on the Carter AFB design, you won't find power valves and the secondary's are mechanical. My son has a street machine that when he fired up his new build, he chose a fresh Edel 650 to dial it in. Later he switched over to a Demon 700 with several challenges. Long story but the Demon was eventually removed and the 650 (jetted fatter) returned.

Not knowing the cam specs is not good as idle quality and low end drivability may be an issue. 700 cfm ish carb of your choice, Th400 with 2.73 gears stick with stock type torque converter.imo.Nick

I'd guess it's the same cam i have. It's a little rough idling. It had a 280H on it. Comp cams 230@.050 and .490 lift. I ran a edel 750 cfm that ran great out of the box. I think they have air valves like the qjet that gives you as much or little cfm as needed. I've switched to the Qjet 800 cfm. I guess it's up to you on what you want. With that rear gear I wouldnt do much of a stall.

Yea, the po just referred to it as a 280 cam and said if anythng it is under cammed dor street use .

So on the stock type converter... should I stay away from the auto parts store types?

Check with local trans shops for what brands/suppliers they recommend for your T-converter. There's always the B&M flavor that's at least branded sometimes available at chain auto stores? There's always Summit Racing. Mystery names? Not so much. Cheap materials and no quality control.
