Yup you read right. Seems to me the engine either is flooding itself or not getting enough. Seems to be after i fill it up she will sputter out. When i hit the gas she will come to life for a split second then die out again.... any ideas

Are you trying to squeeze every last drop possible into the tank? Maybe the charcoal canister became saturated with fuel from overfilling the tank. Does everything go back to normal after you've used up some gas, or is this the fist time it's ever happened?

 

Not sure of the set-up, but if the car has an evaporative emission system (charcoal canister) the fuel tank should be vented. There are two main ways to accomplish this - a vent/vacuum breaker fuel cap (not sealed) or a tank vent that typically have a hose running up to the air cleaner. leave fuel cap loose and see if problem persists. If so - look into tank vent, if not - look elsewhere.

 

No dont overflow the tank, i stop when the pump auto stops . The funny thing is after i let it sit for a couple hours, she starts right up and i drive her just fine

and i dont think it has an emissions system on it

 

In 1970 I believe that some cars had the canister and some did not (I suspect california cars did and Federal did not) - if the emission sticker is still in place underhood it will tell you. Loosening the fuel cap to see if the problem changes is worth the minute it will take to rule one more thing out. A bit of advice from someone who once had a brainfart about tightening the gas cap......don't go driving wild while it is loose :-)
