Cutlass F85 shift lever for auto 2 speed jetaway

Hi,

I tore apart the center console to repair my tach a few days ago and in the process found out that the shift lever to the auto tranny had a jimi-rigged fix to the shift lever handle(the top of the lever is broken off and inside the shift handle). Now I am in need of replacing the whole unit: handle and lever.

I posted a thread under parts wanted and did not get much of a response re: this question other than there are no NOS parts and salvage yards may be the best bet. I am assuming one or more of you have had to deal with this. Curious what you have done to replace the lever and handle. From the pic you can see that the shift handle broke off on the neck of the shift lever.

Did you have luck finding parts?

This is very common. The powdered metal fails at the top of the lever. Good luck finding one. I have seen a few go on ebay for big bucks. I have been looking for 20 years now.

I had a 65 with the same problem. I bought an aftermarket handle to use so it shifted easily until I found a factory replacement. I never found one and later sold the car. But this one worked great, and the hole is very close to a perfect size for your chrome shifter. I took my shifter all apart and welded an extension on the inside rod which moves down and up and made it easier to get the aftermarket thing working. I actually wound up with 2 of them, the pictures are of the extra. Made from machined aluminum, pretty decent. $14 plus shipping if you want it to use on yours.

Good luck,

I did not have any luck though my budget and attention has been diverted to rebuilding the 330 motor this winter. The best I have found is after-market via ebay.

I was thinking about bringing the whole-until to a fabricator and have them make me one if it was within my budget.

I haven't received an email,,,my email is dadphelps@yahoo.com .
I checked usps.com and I can do $20 including shipping by a flat rate box.
If you do paypal, send it as a gift to my email address already listed. Or send me an email telling me what you are thinking.
