Air Conditioning Issue

My 83 Hurst Cutlass - when I turn on AC in any position Max, Normal the air pushes more out of the heat ducts and just a small amount of air blows out of the passenger vents. What could be the problem? And a solution? Thanks

You've got a vacuum leak or a line nor connected. Follow them through, Start at the engine.

Thanks MDchanic,

If you could, please describe what I should be looking for at the engine firewall regarding the vacuum leak or the line. I would think I would have to remove glove compartment and look under dash once I see the problem. Thanks for your help!

I have exactly zero experience with newer cars like yours, but, essentially, you need to follow the vacuum line(s) from the intake manifold to the vacuum reservoir (usually on the firewall), and from there through the dash to the controller and to the vacuum solenoids.

In all likelihood, the vacuum line from the manifold to the reservoir, or from the reservoir to the controller is detached, or the reservoir is cracked or has a bad check valve, so you won't have to look far.

Detailed pictures should be in your Service Manual.
If you don't have a Service Manual, it should be easy to get one on eBay.
Here are a number of them.

IF you can jiggle the selector lever and get some kind of response, or if you hear a hissing at the control head, then the selector vacuum switch has gone leaky. Common issue with these cars. As Eric mentioned, check the vac hoses from manifold to vacuum can. Where will then be a hard plastic vac line going to the control head. This hard line gets brittle and breaks over time.
