1977 Cutlass Supreme starting
Got this 77 that is sometimes finicky on starting. Pretty sure I know what it is. Wondering if there is any easy adjust or a tear down. Key in the ignition, idiot lights light up but nothing on engaging the key. Giggle the tilt and it starts. Is this something I can adjust outside the column? Im figuring there is a rod to the neutral safety switch. Hate to open the top of the column if i dont have to. Regards Pat McMillan Robinson IL

There are a multitude of potential issues here. As suggested above, if the upper tilt part of the column is loose (a common problem on the GM tilt columns), that can cause a problem. If the backdrive linkage from the trans to the NSS is missing, the NSS can vibrate out of position, causing the problem. Worn bushings or misadjustment in the backdrive linkage can cause the problem. Worn contacts in the NSS or ignition switch can cause the problem. Worn contacts in the starter solenoid can cause the problem.

I should add that it's also not uncommon for the rack and pinion that is turned by the lock cylinder to crack and cause a problem. Replacement parts are available. We're all just spitballing potential causes here. You need to do some troubleshooting.
