New Scam bullshed

"Good Morning,

Hope you get this on time, I made a trip to Athens, Greece and had my bag stolen from me with my passport and personal effects therein. The embassy has just issued me a temporary passport but I have to pay for a ticket and settle my hotel bills with the Manager.

I have made contact with my bank but it would take me 3-5 working days to access funds in my account, the bad news is my flight will be leaving in less than 12-hrs from now but I am having problems settling the hotel bills the hotel manager won't let me leave until I settle the bills, I need your help/LOAN financially and I promise to make the refund once I get back home, you are my last resort and hope, Please let me know if I can count on you and I need you to keep checking your email because it's the only way I can reach you.

Thanks
Lane"

Anytime anybody that I don't know asks me for money, it doesn't sound legit.
As far as this one goes, it's worse than the african prince, prime minister scheme. Asking to borrow and nothing in return but a promise. Was this written by a 3rd grader?? You gotta be one stupid MF to send money to the person you don't know.

This is the part I love

the hotel manager won't let me leave until I settle the bills
HOW is the hotel manager preventing him from leaving? Is he physically restraining him in some way. Did he kidnap him, duct tape him to a chair, jam a cloth in his mouth, and stick him a back room somewhere? But if he did that, this person would not be able to send this email. So he apparently is NOT restrained and thus could leave any time he wants.

My friends e-mail got hacked and the scammers used his name and e-mail address to send a personal plea out to his contact list for $. Same type of "stranded over seas" situation that didn't exist.

Ever here the one where they steal your credit card bill,Pay it off and fill out the change of address on.Then a new card is sent to them.In the mean time you're busy keeping your mouth shut because you're not getting a bill. This way they can max your card out slowly maybe even make a payment or two.All the while not send up any red flags.

I can not believe how many lotteries I win each week, I should really get around to buying a ticket.

Hey your odds are about the same without a ticket.
Sometimes I buy a 50/50 ticket the person selling them says just one and I say your pulling one right why would I buy 2?

Reminds me of a story.A man had mule die.His friend said I'll take it.
What are you going to do with a dead mule?
I'm going to raffle it off $5 a ticket.
Who's going to buy a raffle ticket on a dead mule?
I'm not going to tell anyone it's dead.
Some time later the guy ask ,Hey how'd you make out on that raffle?
great I made $200
Didn't anyone complain when they found out it was dead?
Just one.
What'd you do?
I gave him his money back.

This I don't get. A change of address does not automatically trigger the issuance of a new card. I know because I changed addresses two years ago, and I didn't receive new cards for any of my accounts as a result. I continued to use the old ones until their expiration date came up, and new cards were sent to my current address.

Someone stealing your bill could certainly request new cards, but they would have to prove they're you by some sort of identity verification process. The thief would also have your credit card account number, but he would not have the 3-digit number on the back. Without the actual card itself, he could not make in-person purchases with the card because he doesn't have it. He couldn't make online purchases because he doesn't have the 3-digit number, and it's been a long time since I've seen a website that did not ask for this three-digit number when placing an order.

Another issue is actually stealing your bill. I know that many mailboxes are not secure, but mine is as it's in one of those banks of mailboxes many housing developments are using now, and it's a locked box. Only my wife and I have a key, so the only way the mail could be stolen would be if the letter carrier did it or it was stolen in transit. If your mail is stolen, you should report it immediately to the post office and then consider getting a P.O. box if the problem persists.

I had an amusing call at the boneyard today. Machine call says my Mastercard [which I don't have] has been "locked" but, lucky me, they can unlock it for me if I just press 1... So, while pulling the items I needed, I did.

NO problem, just enter your credit card number.
OK

Huh, 1111144211111 is not a legitimate card number, you don't say?
Neither is 000-0000-0000-0000 I guess...

Wowza.
