Swapped a transmission today
In a 15 year old whirlpool washer! Had bought it used 10 years ago, and had just gotten rid of a older whirlpool that lost the timer. Had rebuilt the old washers transmission and had it sitting around. Hopefully will get 10 more years. The old whirlpool agitation washers are so easy to work on. Appliance repair can be a money saver diy.
Wish I was half as confident working on my new 69 Cutlass. The competency of the members on this site is impressive. Right now trying to learn carbs, my car isn’t cold starting. It’s fun to learn, but I tend to overthink things.
Spent the last 20 years working on TV transmitters and equipment, so have confidence in my ability to mess things up, then learn.

Today’s appliances aren’t made to be serviced or repaired. We live in a throwaway society. The stuff made today unfortunately costs more to fix than to replace.
If your comfortable repairing appliances, and technical enough to understand electronics, then you can fix just about anything on your car. Buy a factory service manual, that will tell you what you need to know. All the fancy tools outlined on the book is easy enough to either fabricate or work around.

Bought the chassis and body manuals, Ruggles quadrajet book was just delivered.
Just bought the car, was starting perfectly. Ran some seafoam in the gas, cleaned the carb, changed the plugs, fixed some vacuum lines. Now she won’t start cold, just cranks. Put a bit of gas in the primaries and it starts right up, choke works, runs great. Can restart when warm, perfect. Sit overnight, won’t start. My Theory for now is the cleaning washed off some varnish and the plugs on the carb are leaking. But want to learn as much as possible before diving in. Am putting a new fuel filter on this week, and want to verify that the bowl is empty. Once I figure out how.

I have a matched set Whirlpool washer and dryer about 10 years old , about 2 years ago one of the two pumps on the washer started to leak
easy fix since both pumps are mounted on the bottom I opted for the cheap Chinese replacement from Amazon at one third of the price of the fac.part so far so good. Last year the dryer (electric) stopped working and to my surprise started flashing a code, I went in to the manual and found the code
(I forget what it was) and then hit You-Tube, one of the video's said with this code it was most likely a failed control panel circuit board, so I removed it and sure enough you could see where a capacitor had burned up, no cheaping out on this one though had to buy the factory part because it's all that was available ,however it was at a reduced price on Amazon it arrived in 2 days, problem solved. the dryer is pretty basic I'm glad I didn't have to go any deeper in to the washer !!!

Many appliances are the same manufacturer, i had a kenmore dryer w owners manual, but i found diagnostic codes for a very similar whirlpool listed online. I was able to troubleshoot my dryer and replace a thermal fuse for $10. The diagnostic told me it wasnt the panel like sollys, no mention of codes in the kenmore owners manual, but they were in the whirlpool one! Appliancepartspro.com is helpful for finding parts and has helpful videos associated w some parts replacements
greybeard back to your hard start. If you dont know these old cars havea starting procedures unlike todays fuel injected cars. In general the procedure will be the same, there may be slight variations to a particular car.
if your carb is clean and adjustments have been made according to the CSM, depress the gas pedal once to set the choke, crank the engine, stop, crank again. i only crank for 5 seconds or less at a time. If its sat a couple days i will pump the gas a couple times between cranks. Todays gas has a tendency to require these old cars to be cranked a few times. If i start it every day its only 1 or two 5 second crank cycles after setting the choke. If it sits for a week or so its 3 to 5 five second crank cycles w a couple pumps of gas between crank cycles.

Plug leakage is possible but in reality it seldom is the problem. Is the accelerator pump squirting a good stream every time you pump? If not the carb maybe dry through evaporation or the pump seals are bad from alcohol in the gas. Could be a weak fuel pump has a bad valve and is leaking back towards the tank causing a issue with getting primed or something as mentioned above posts Just try one thing at a time till you hit upon the answer then please let us know others are in the same boat I had a bad base gasket leaking on mine that drove me nuts till I found it through elimination....Tedd

Can’t remember ever have to try multiple starts like this back in 1984 when I previously had a 67 Impala with a quadrajet that rarely was driven. I do need to continue with a fuel filter and check timing. She sure runs good after she starts. Choke and idle seem to be solid. Motor is quiet and strong.
