Snacks

Like most of us here I like snacks. A favorite is salted mixed nuts though with no gall bladder I have to go light on them, but team 'em up with a good cold beer and I'm in heaven for a while.

I usually go for deluxe with no peanuts, but last couple years I've noticed the big names like Planters no longer include Brazils in the mix. Went in Big Lots yesterday and found an "off-brand" that is loaded with Brazils. Oh yeah.

I think this snack is peculiar to the South as I've never seen it anywhere else. Get you a small bag of Lance peanuts and a bottled cola drink- Coke, RC, Pepsi, Cheerwine if you can find it. Take a swig from the drink to make some room, then pour the peanuts into the bottle. Sometimes the drink will foam so give it a few seconds, then turn up and enjoy. Cola sweet, peanuts salt and texture.

We had a kid at work from northern Pennsylvania and the first time he saw one of us pour peanuts in the Co-Cola he said "what the hell are you doing?!" In a few weeks we had him doing it too. Within a year we also had him saying "y'all" like he was born here.😎

If you had met Yankee troops, using this method, you would have won the Civil War. Unfortunately about the Coca-Cola mix, it wasn't yet invented, until a few decades thereafter. And it was real Coca-Cola, back then

When it comes to commercial snacks these are my favorites in no specific order , Chili Frito's, Kettle brand salt and ground black pepper chips, Stacy's simply naked pita chips and good old homemade popcorn with butter and salt,
If I have to build something just plain old saltine cracker with a slice of any kind of hard cheese or cheese spread .
When it comes to sweets ANYTHING Reese's !!
and what drives my wife crazy, a teaspoon of peanut butter right out of the jar !! which I get away with because she hates peanut butter so I'm the only one in the jar.

About when i first bought my first car at the age of 15, I used to be a Peanut cup junkie. I couldn't stop eating those things. Nowadays, when I even eat peanuts, I get a massive protein shock that knocks me back.
They have something similar in Germany and I turned an ex-work associate on to these, claiming that they're so good that she will have an extremely hard time stopping. Sure enough. she was astonished as to how delicious they were. She later complained about having begun growing a midriif spare tire

Anyone into peanut butter cheesecakes? Well here, knock yourselves out:

If you are from the mid-Atlantic (especially the Philly area) there are only two types of snacks allowable. Herr's Potato Chips and Tastykakes. They are the best.

Utz chips are more common here but I like Herr's if I can find them. Ollie's used to have every variety Herr's made but last time I went in there the snack aisle was kinda sparse. Wise and Moore's chips good too. I wouldn't kick a dead cat in the *** for anything Lay's makes except chili cheese Fritos and crunchy cheddar jalapeno Cheetos. For regular puffy cheese doodles it's gotta be Wise Cheez Doodles. Corn chips, Wise Dipsy Doodles.

Lance crackers and peanuts, hell yeah! 🤙🤟

Tastykake used to have a big presence here but I rarely see them now. I DO NOT like Hostess snacks, too sugary.

When I lived in Chicago as a kid the local favorite was Jays potato chips, You used to be able to go to the factory and buy bags of what they called brownies, these were the overcooked chips that were picked off the final assembly line because they were over cooked I loved them !!
But what do I know ? Growing up in Chicago I used to drink Old Style beer !! YUK !!

And now the brownies are considered gourmet tater chips! Utz Dark Russets, mmm.

A local bar and grill chain made their own tater chips onsite. Boy those things were good with a corned beef Reuben and some ranch dressing. There's only one location left, 70 miles away. The damn plague got the one here. And El Supremo just extended covid restrictions for another month. We'll see even more locals close permanently, I'm afraid.

Usually a coke and 2 grape airheads fixes my daily sweet tooth on occasion. For me though a childhood favorite and maybe possibly just local to chicago would be Vitners triple tangy cheese potato chips. @31 I'm growing out of my junk food junkie phase still . Trolli sour worms and sour apple o's , kit kat bars and big league chew ( grape) still randomly find their way into my shopping cart . Beef jerky is my kryptonite on the road. Clearly snacks are my down fall. Oh pork cracklings too with some hot sauce.

Speaking of going to the factory...
Sometimes, in my Dad's travels, he would be driving through Hershey, PA on his way home. Occasionally he would stop at the factory and pick up a 10-20 pound block of chocolate. Don't ask me how, he knew people everywhere. He would then bring it home and put it in the freezer down in the basement. Whenever we wanted something sweet, we would just go downstairs and use a screwdriver to break off a chunk.

I'd forgotten all about that, wow.

I'm surprised I don't weigh 500 lbs. with the way my wife cooks. There's generally homemade chex mix, cookies, fudge, beef jerky, etc. available on the counter. Plus, momma has been making home made ice cream recently. Combined with my home brew no wonder I can't loose any weight despite doing walkabout in the mornings!

Here in Arizona at our Circle K convivence stores they sell the little beef sticks called Little Rattlers, they are sold at the register, they used to be in a dispenser similar to a old straw dispenser (push the bar dispense beef stick ) but since covid the are now wrapped two to a package
they were 2 for $1.00 and probably the best bang for the buck ever , I love beef sticks and jerky just two expensive but not these the little suckers are positively addictive !! couple Little Rattlers and a Mountain Dew and good to go !!!

Yup you got it !! my brain constantly tells me I'm 25 my bones and muscles remind me I'm going on 67 in Feb, occasionally the wisdom of being around 67 years creeps in and brings me to my senses.

Just throwing this in,
My mother-in-law is 92 years old, one of the simple pleasures she enjoys when it comes to sweets is PEEP'S you know the little sugar covered yellow , pink ., marshmallow chicks, rabbits, ducks you see around Easter and Christmas. However she likes them a certain way, she likes to tear open the package let them sit out get a little stale and then eat them ! shes's 92 who am I to judge !!
My mother when she was still alive enjoyed one of the oldest candies around Mary Janes, she loved them, at Halloween I used to save them all for her.

I guess, there's no use for her to take out a life insurance policy on you, then

Like me, aged from the neck up. But, still 20 years old from the waist down During Doubleya Doubleya Two, French women were known for being nationalistic from the neck up and internationalistic from the waist down, as the Germans invaded. Nowadays, it isn't the Germans who're invading. However, the rule still applies

I can too which is why I rarely keep them around.

One of the few old-time country stores left around here gets all kinds of Christmas candy in around first of November. Mrs J always has plenty of those Goetze bullseyes.

Cracker Barrel restaurants usually have a decent selection of old time candies.

There are 5 Cracker Barrels within an hour's drive. Which is a good thing, 'cause if they were any closer I'd be in there too often.

If it keeps me from having to go in Walmart they can build all the Dollar Generals they want. There are 6 in a 15 mile radius of the house and also a big distribution center.

How can you not like a Cracker Barrel breakfast?!😮 Consistent food, quick and pleasant service, and gobs of neat old stuff to look at. Or so my experience has been, and I've eaten at CBs from GA to PA to IL.

Come to think of it, I've never had a bad experience at a Waffle House either. Even when we were in there half drunk at 2AM.🥴

I’ve never had one so I can’t comment on the quality or taste.

I eat breakfast right after I get up, way before I ever leave the house. No way could I ever handle waking up, getting ready, driving however far it is to one of these joints, getting seated, placing an order, waiting for the food to be prepared, then waiting for it to be brought to me. Dang, I’d waste most of my morning and likely starve by the time I eventually got something to eat.

I dunno how people survive doing that.

It's high time that they start going on diets. Namely, snacking on sugar-free, low-fat "edibles"

I can't stand Waffle House. My wife, who grew up in the south and going to them, loves them and can't understand my view. I just tell her that my problem with Waffle House comes down to one thing... I've never seen a clean one. Every one that I've been in should have been closed down by the Board of Health.
