Sad day at the Thompson's house

All of us who have bought a puppy know that at sometime later in our life our pet will become old and feeble and will have to be put down. Today was that day for Maggie, my best hunting partner and constant loyal family companion and without a doubt the best pheasant dog I ever hunted behind weather my dog or someone else's. Someone once told me that a person will only gets one special dog in his life and I now can say I've had mine. Sad day today.... Tedd

sorry to hear ...

I will say my condolences as dogs ARE family I know I have had mine too but a few years ago I got a jack Russel terrier, and what's more my daughter who went with my missus to pick him up made an urgent call to my cell while I was at work explaining to me that we HAVE to take his brother the runt of the litter to save him from the glue factory lol... of course there was no discount on price but I did end up with two pretty good friends, no they aren't the one but they are just as loyal and love me as much as I do them , maybe when you have healed some you will be able to open your heart to a new friend Maggie would want that for you may she rest in peace and again my condolences

I am a big dog lover and i feel you pain. i have 2 dogs now. My last dog was my girlfriends but in the 3 years he was in my life he impacted me alot. When he passed away i was the one who said something was wrong. by the time the vet got to him it was too late.

My deepest sympathy for you and your family. I have had 'the one' too, and having to put him down was one of the most difficult things I have ever had to do. I feel your pain............ sitting here with tears in my eyes now.........

My most sincere sympathy, My humane society mutt Sabastion is now 16, and has been by far pound for pound the best $50 I've ever spent. I finally came home last Saturday after a two month TDY to Lima Peru. I had a great time, made some good coin, but aside from being glad to return to my wife and boys I thank God that I was able to hold him again. I found myself concerned that my evening phone call would report him gone. I usually try to refrain from reponding to non Olds posts, but then again it does not get much more pertinent. Focus on the good memories.

You have my empathy, Tedd. My "one dog" left me five years ago and I will never forget him. You are lucky to have had such a friend. Lots of people never have dogs and don't know the love they are missing out on.

From a guy who routinely argues with his wife over who gets buried with which animal's ashes, you have my deepest and most sincere sympathies.

In my opinion, the disparity in lifespans between humans and animals is one of mother nature's cruelest realities.

I've stood where you are more times than I care to remember, and each one is painful beyond comprehension.

My 'one' was Bailey - a Great Dane who 'gave' my wife her engagement ring via his collar and was part of our wedding photos...he's been gone 10 years and I still well up thinking of his sweet soul.

Smile and take solace in the fact that Maggie is chasing pheasants somewhere better right now...and missing you I'm sure.

This wont help your loss, but will help others understanding.
Thoughts are with your family. Adopt another, my rescue dog has been nothing but perfect for me.

Many of us know this-but for those who don't, it's a moving and touching poem that can help when we've lost a dear friend.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

What a great and comforting poem. I have never seen that one before.

My wife and I have a wonderful dog also named Maggie. She was a stray I brought home in 2005. She is beautiful and the special dog in our lives. We have always had dogs and some special ones but none like her. I know the day will come and there is no doubt I will cry me head off. I am very sorry for you loss.

My late friend Richard Lau who passed away last year was a pretty crusty character. He did have a soft spot for animals. He had three of his dogs ashes buried with him and left $5,000 to Operation Kindness which is a no kill shelter.

RIP Maggie.

Just saw this, I'm very sorry for your loss Tedd. I'm an animal lover myself, losing them is hard. I unexpectedly lost a really close friend just about one year ago. I'll leave it at that...

Jamesbo, had to skip the poem. I've read it before, I'm not brave enough to read it again just yet.

Thanks again all, just to fill you in on our dog situation (we are dog people) we have two others, Lucy who also is a wonderful young Springer and was brought in to the family because we knew Maggie was going into retirement soon and hopefully she would pick up a few pointers from Maggie both social and in the hunting game. So far we are o for two but with great potential. Then there is Jammers who is a brute of a dog, half lab and boxer who keeps all the tigers, lions and bears away from the house but his other job is mascot for a day center for little kids so you know where his heart is.

So we are dog rich but the house still seems very empty these last two days.
Thanks again, Time heals all wounds.....Tedd

Very sorry for your loss. My wife and I are animal people, I've had dogs since I was very young and know the pain of losing one. Our 2 dogs and 2 cats are our family.

When we lost our last dog, the pain lasted a long time but was tempered by our puppy , Maggie. Maggie is now 13 years old and the years are beginning to show a bit. Losing a pet is like losing a family member because they ARE a family member. I hope our Maggie lasts many more years but death is part if life and life goes on. My condolences on your loss.

I know how you feel. I lost my dear wife Carol in may to cancer. We have two dogs they feel the lost of Carol. Our little one who was Carols favorite has became my best buddy. He goes everywhere with me. He will go to car shows with me long as i put Carol's pillow in the car. You can see that part
of Carol's sprit is in him. So I think she is still with us. It has helped me so
much. I want to give them the best life I can because they are all I have left to take care of. The kids are grown up and moved away. So it's just me and the boys. Like I said I see her sprit in both them. So I know she is still
with us.

So sorry to hear the news. I've never had dogs, but I've had cats, who were like my kids, and were with me through so many things for so many years, put to sleep. That's one of the hardest things to do, but when they can't live without being in pain and such, it's time to let them go on to better places. You'll always have your special memories and that special place in your heart for her.

Losing a pet is definitely the same as losing any other member of the family. I'm sorry for your loss, Tedd.
