RIP George Jones

Love or hate country music, this man was a legend and now he's gone. I think Willie, Charlie, Hank Jr. and Merle are the only ones we have left...

One of my fav. Jones recordings:

And perhaps topical, there's Tex Ritter's "Hillbilly Heaven":

(George isn't mentioned, though)

Very sad, but his music will live on forever.
I Can't believe how much music has changes since "White Lightning"!

I grew up listening to George Jones and many other legends. My cousin married a talented young lady from St. Stephen, Minnesota, who several years ago, became George's backup singer and duet partner; proof that dreams do come true. Today, she mourns the loss of her boss, mentor, & dear friend. We share in her grief and the grief of country music fans everywhere. Ol' George will be missed.

Sad for sure. Charlie Pride was in my store today having his grandsons car worked on. He is such a cool down to earth guy. He getting on up there in age too.

I grew up living next door to Charley Pride. His son Dion was my best friend for years. I remember when Dion became old enough to drive he had to share a 76 Rallye Nova with their maid for about a year, then Charley went out and bought him a brand new 1979 10th Anniversary Pontiac Trans Am. It was an automatic, so it had the Olds 403. What a beautiful car, we cruised Forest Lane quite a few nights in that car. One night Dion dropped one of the t tops when we were putting them back on, shattered all over the place. I remember we went up to Parkway Pontiac when they were on Dallas Parkway to see about getting another one. It was going to take at least 6 weeks to get the special silver tinted TA/TA top. After about 30 minutes of hemming and hawing the service manager took us out back to a badly burned TA/TA that was on the back lot with something like 32 miles on it and pulled it's one good top and put the latch section from
the dropped top in the burned hulk and said "Here you go. Tell your Dad I said "Hello".
His brother Craig had a 74 Laguna S-3 when he started driving. 454 and a 4 speed, white with a red lower body and interior. That car used to shake my bedroom window when he drove it home late at night. To say it was fast is an understatement. Good times and good memories.
I understand they are making a movie about Charley. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is slated to play him.

There is a white 1955 Super 88 (customized 1950s style) in New Hampshire, that has the name "White Lighting". That rig has a 455 from a 68 W-34 Toronado.

I never saw GJ in concert, but did see Tammy W, back in August of 1997, in Lansing, MI (Oldsmobile's 100th).
