Question

My 69 drop top needs new shoes, I've got a set of 15" bolt on centers SS II laying around and was thinking switching to 15 " rims/ What tire size would you learned people go with

Like Greg, rain here this morning as forecasted. Even with the rain it's warm at 72 at 0900. We're supposed to get periods of showers and some thunderstorms throughout the day today and all day tomorrow, some heavy. There is a Flash Flood warning in effect for our and neighboring counties.

No big plans for today. Going to try to get motivated to do some dental insurance claims book keeping to figure out where we're at with billed versus insurance paid, versus what we'll owe out of pocket. My wife's dentist has a horrible billing department and process, an absolute nightmare to understand and decode. So far, I ain't feeling it. Maybe another cup of coffee, or maybe two, will get me going???

James - 235/60R-15's are a very common size that are put on these cars, and are available from all the major tire manufacturers. This size is wide enough to look sporty and fill up the wheel wells without worrying about any clearance issues. I don't know if you're interested in raised white letters or not, but here is a picture of 235/60R-15's on 15" SSI's and on my car.

James - This may help, using my Tire Calculator, the 235's are only 0.1" taller than the 215's (26.1" vs. 26.0"), and are about 0.75" wider (9.25" vs. 8.46"). I think you would be happy with either, the 235's will give you a little more sporty look I think.

Jamesbo, I had 245-60x15 on the rear of my '71, the right diameter and filled the wheel wells. The fronts were 225-70x14, I ahdn't changed them over to 15" yet.

Just to be sure, I'm gonna test fit the 15" rims, and get sum new beauty rings. I've got a few other things to take care of Stay tuned

 

Tires: BFG P245/60R15 100S M+S (Front & Rear)

 

kinda depends upon what look you want - tall or short sidewall. I have 245-60-15s all around on my car for the short sidewall look. Something in a 70 series would give a taller sidewall ook.

Kenneth - Your car is drop dead gorgeous too! My dad had a 69 Pontiac LeMans that color that I always loved.

 

When or if my car ever needs new rubbers, I'd buy these in a heart beat. Same tires I ran on my 1967 442 - I love red lines. To a certain degree I wish I needed new rubbers.

Norm - I love those too, but I would want the F60-15's instead of the F70's. However, the F60's are $323 each, way more than I'm ever going to spend on tires. Another point, and I don't know if it's true, but I've read a bunch of stories on this forum about these tires being a nightmare to correctly balance???

Chris - Hell, I don't know. I was paying between $45-$50 per tire for this exact tire between 1969-1971. I could almost get a full summer of driving on a set of these bias-ply babies (June through September in Northern Illinois). Regarding balancing. I was working at a Shell Oil Company service station & I would use our On-Car Wheel Spin Balancer. I could put a glass of water filled to the top on the roof and not spill a drop by the time I got done. Yeah, you true the wheel & tire to the oscillations of the car which means you really can't rotate the tires, but I didn't care - I could use the spin balancer for free. We had bubble balancers and stand-alone balancers but that On-Car Wheel Spin Balancer was the absolute best.

 

James - Snap-On center caps. My spare tire (wheel) is a 14" bolt-on center cap.

 

James - I'm betting that's a canal in the background of Dan's photo. I believe in one area I can see water between the two banks of rip-rap.

Work was a winner. Finished up around 1 and on the road soon after. Two more times doing this and then the weekend. How is it I'm that lucky?

Norm Grandma always said, don't go out without your rubbers. If I had to guess what my car came with from the factory, I'd say it was whitewall tires on SSI rims. Being a Supreme and not a 442 makes me think the white letters wouldn't have been chosen. Unless the guy doing the ordering was a cool dude. I have no idea of this car's history past the place that the good doctor bought it from.

Jamesbo are you going to put your new tires on the rims you keep wanting me to come get? I'd get them if I had a use for them. Or are they the wheels that are on the car now? We haven't seen a picture of your car in quite awhile. Maybe since the starter went out when the Supermodel was driving. Speaking of retrieving things, I need to come up for the outdoor sand blaster.

So I have this VW shell and it's actually really nice, but the floor is shot. What could I do with the shell that would be fun and cool? Cut the top off down to the window sills and graft it on to the top of a van. Mount it on a V8 frame and rebuild the nose around the engine. Right now I have the fenders off.

It's really nice out and a bit over 80. My plans for this afternoon are to finish my taxes and get ready for my two trips coming up. I might have a couple things to mail but don't know if I'll make it to the post office by 5. Eh, they aren't critical, yet.

Mike, I've got 14" SS ii on the drop top and 15" SS ii on the Visa both have bolt on centers. I've had some 15 "" bolt on in the boxes they were shipped to me in for maybe 10 years and just thought If I was gonna buy new tires why not use them. Some decisions take me a while

I also have some 15" snow tires that came with the H.O come and get them

The sand blaster is waiting on you when ever you want/need it. Just leave me an Amphi as a deposit

Norm - The On-Car Wheel Spin balancer is pretty cool. I seem to recall guys on this forum claiming the issues now associated with balancing these Coker/Firestone tires coincided with a change in production from the U.S. to Mexico, can't verify that though.

 

Something on this order. But Busses are too expensive to hack up for a project these days.

Norm what a great idea. Flash light at the tires when they are spinning and they will balance. Don't have to worry about throwing the weights off when you hit a bump.

James - Can't disagree with you about the size of those rocks, many look like what I'd call boulders. Where I grew up we used "rip-rap" as a generic term for rock used to line canals, river banks, lake shores, etc. to protect against erosion, there was no connotation as to the size of the rocks.

Chris , when i wrote education i was thinking on hunter courses or skarp shooting clubs. and no
criminal record. But if you want a firearm , knowing the "right" people is a tip like the bad guys do.
We have have air rifles but don´t know if these can harm a badger .

Glenn - I know badgers are known to be tough animals, but I believe you could definitely kill a badger with the highest powered .22 caliber air rifles. As with any hunting rifle, you need to know the maximum effective distance for kill shots, and be an accurate enough marksman to place your shot in the kill zone. I have read multiple articles about guys taking coyotes with .22 caliber air rifles, and if they'll kill a coyote, they'll kill a badger. Distance and shot placement is critical!

Norm - Congratulations, good shooting! Looks like a helluva project. Add one high quality competition weight lifting belt to your list of supplies, your back is gonna need it with all those 80lb. bags of concrete and mortar!

 

I have a rotating concrete mixer I purchased when I built the gate columns. What you do w/ those 80# bags is lay a 3' piece of rebar on the concrete driveway, lay an 80# bag directly across the middle of the bag on top of the rebar, slice straight across on top of the middle of a bag (directly above the rebar), then lift the rebar straight up from the middle with a couple of angular motions (it will tear the bag directly in half), and you can then set two 40# bags on each end. Makes short order of it.

 

Norm - Sounds like a good trick. Last concrete work I did was about 3 or 4-years ago helping one of my son-in-laws poor a 10' x 12' pad at their house outside the walkout basement door. He was doing the finishing work, and I was trying to keep him in concrete, mixing it all by hand in a wheelbarrow. It was an all day project and I was crippled for about 3-days afterwards. Won't ever do that again without a power mixer and using your your 40lb. bag trick!

 

Chris - During my first two years of undergrad I worked summers on a concrete crew framing\pouring foundations & setting 10'H x 8" thick concrete walls (10" steel ties) in what are known as "Quads". Each concrete form weighed ~80# (10'H x 3"D x 4'W). We had to set the forms, pour the walls, remove the forms, walk the 8"W concrete walls we had poured & stack the forms back onto flatbed trailers. Walking 8"W concrete walls all day with an 80# concrete form on your shoulder. Four "births" each measuring ~50'W x 50'W x 10'H, for a building total of 40,000 sq. ft (or 400,00 cubic feet). Each "birth" was the foundation & basement for a single condominium - four condominiums (two stories each) comprised a single building. There were 10 crews w/ ~5-6 laborers/crew/building. At any one time there were ~8-9 buildings being built. I recall one Friday I told my girlfriend I'd pick her up ~9pm. After work & a shower I fell asleep and woke up Saturday night about 6pm. Exhausting work.

 

Jamesbo, it's the Muskegon Channel, which connects Muskegon Lake to lake Michigan. There is a walkway where the blue hand rails are located. I'll see if i can find a pic of it. Chris, thanks. yes I sold it right after the recession. I should have kept it, It's no W31, but it didn't need to be restored either. it was a nice car. The '70 to '72 Supreme hardtops and convert's are just a good looking design. I may try in the future to get an SX, I had one in '76-'78, my first nice car.

 

 

That's the Coast Guard Station in the background, I was parked about 300 feet from there. There is a parking and picnic area there. Lake Michigan is on the horizon, with Muskegon State Park located on the right, across the channel. The Silversides Submarine & museum is behind the photographer. Oddly enough, when I was much younger, before there was a submarine and museum, I used to take my date here to watch the "submarine races". I musta been a psychic or sumthing
