Mike - As long as it really is fleas. If the itching continues think about the possibility of scabies. They'll drive a canine bonkers.

Nope Norm definitely fleas. Seen them scurrying around on his belly. According to Wikipedia scabies is a human problem not transmitted to animals. Animal "scabies" is mange. Either way it sounds awful.

Saw the The Palmer House in Chicago is going to close. That is a travesty. Millions in debt. Most likely the lack of patrons during this stupid pandemic was the final blow. And after 100 years(actually starting in 1871).

Dream the dogs I used to have would play in the yard, even as seniors it was a hoot to watch them. My boy would pounce on my girl and my girl would bite his neck. All with growling and barking, it was so much fun to watch them.

Things I noticed on the way home yesterday, there were about a dozen cars on the side of the road with a flat tire. Also, I counted 9 Airstreams. There must have been a meet or something. One of the nine was an Argosy. The Argosy is a painted Airstream with steel endcaps. I always wondered if on the line an Airstream that got damaged or scratched got painted to hide it, and then became an Argosy, or they built them that way on purpose.

Mike - Good deal you can see the fleas - much better than scabies. BTW, Scabies is a zoonotic parasite which can jump from a non-human (animal) to humans. SARS-CoV-19 is a zoonotic positive sense RNA virus. The correct term in this application is actually Sarcoptic Mange. Much like the 'general' term mange, scabies is a 'general' term for Sarcoptes scabiei. They are Arthropods of the Sarcoptiformes Order. Arthropods are the most successful animals on the planet. They inhabit nearly every niche of space available. Insects are Arthropods.

Mike - I've seen a fair number of Argosy during my travels and residing in RV parks across the nation. Some of them are pretty nice. I don't really care for them like I do the original polished aluminum Airstreams. Those things were built like a rock. Here's a fairly decent article on the Argosy from a supposed knowledgeable Argosy person.

VC - There you go, what did I say earlier about learning something new all the time on this thread! Welcome to "Norm's Schoolhouse Rock". Tell the truth, were you a science nerd? I have to admit I was, geologist and remote sensing by education, but double naut spy (Intel analyst) by vocation. Jethro had nothin on me, LoL!

VC - Awesome credentials there pardner, I'm thoroughly impressed! Glad you had some geology in your background so you can figure out the rocks in our heads. I have a geology/anthropology double major undergrad; geology grad; and a second grad in program management that came later in my career. I spent my entire +35-year career with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

Dream - That's awesome. I supported two TS Fed. Agencies (which shall always remain nameless) who employed National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency satellite systems. Did my Grad work @ Univ of OK, Norman. I believe it was ranked the top 3rd Petroleum Geology school in the country (I believe Pittsburgh was #1)? I was employed as a FT Univ Staff member in the Dept of Botany & Microbiology while conducting my research. So, I had a bunch of freebies (Out-Of-State tuition waived, salaried, taught TEM/SEM @ The Samuel Roberts Noble Microscopy Laboratory) during my 5 year tenure as Norman from Norman, OK.

With plenty of time on my hands, I elected to pursue Geology & Oceanography as a secondary academic tract. My first course in Geology (for Majors) was a brand new styled course. It consisted of instructors from each major discipline of Geology. A couple instructors who were either Emeritus or retired taught their respective discipline. So what, a 5 hour credit course (with lab) = 32 hours divided by I think there were either 7 or 8 instructors during the semester. The two which fascinated me the most were: (1) The instructor who spent his entire (40+ year) career examining the magnetic plate data on each side of the mid-Atlantic ridge and created Polar alignments with the North Star demonstrating magnetic shift; and (2) The instructor who spent his entire career on plate tectonics, orogeny, subduction and vulcanism. 67 students in the class, I ranked 3rd. Not because I was the smartest by any means, it was because I was a fiend for knowledge. In fact, I approached the lead professor prior to one class lecture and indicated to him the text we were using incorrectly identified two diagrams and text. They had metamorphic and igneous rocks labeled incorrectly. He looked at me as if he'd seen a ghost. The following lecture period he made an announcement to the class regarding the error.

Mike - I just finished reading the article in the Chicago Sun Times. I've stayed @ The Palmer House many times such a great landmark and building. It mentioned proceedings wouldn't begin until February 2021. Said Wells Fargo holds the paper. Something like $333MM in debt plus a $94MM mezzanine loan. An affiliate of Thor Equities owns the Palmer House. They haven't owned the building for very long. They bought it in 2005, performed a $150MM renovation and then refinanced the Palmer House @ $365MM in 2012. Since Thor Equities is absolutely enormous in size, I suspect they might find investors to stall the foreclosure. Even if the foreclosure goes through I suspect it will hopefully retain the name The Palmer House. Fingers crossed.

Norm, Did you ever lick basalt?
Seriously, That's a very impressive resume

When I was in college [Emory] all the pre med students would wreck the curve in Biology and Chemistry so all the not so brilliant students [ like me] took "Rocks"

During an identification lab you had to be care if you were under the second story window. Some of the students would take a pocket full of rocks they knew [and could identify] and throw the ones they didn't know know out the window

Good morning guys,

James - Great to see another "Rock" guy! You are spot on about those damn pre-med students wrecking the curve in chemistry and biology courses. Didn't upset me too much though, I was having a lot more fun than they were!
Hope everyone has a great day!

LoL! I wasn't far from that mindset. I didn't have a plan for what I wanted to do when I started, all I knew was I wanted to go someplace where I could still play football. No Division 1 schools were interested in me, I had a few offers from a couple local Division 2 schools, but I doubted whether I'd ever break into the starting lineup at that level. I ended up going to a Division 3 school called Albion College which had a very strong Division 3 program at that time. I got to play right away and all was well! I took an intro geology class my freshman year and thought it was interesting so I kept going, and on to Grad school. I really, really wanted to be an exploration petroleum geologist, but when I got my Masters in 1983, absolutely no companies were hiring. A recruiter from the National Geospatial-Intellignce Agency came onto campus to give a spiel on what they did and how to apply. He told us, no one does what we do, we're just looking for folks with strong science/math/computer backgrounds, and the first thing we will do is send you to our own internal school for 6-months. I applied, got selected, and stayed 35-years. Sometimes you just luck into a good deal, I certainly did in this case!

Hi eveyone.

Back at my desk today. Though I didn't get much done, as most of the wheels were ones I signed for yesterday, and I can't return my own work. So my wall guy built them up and gave the cards to other mechanics. Tomorrow should be better.

Norm that was the word I saw on Wikipedia, sarcoptic. Tiger is loads better today, I have kept giving him the Apoquen and apparently the flea medicine helped as well, although I didn't see any more fleas after using the spray. I'm just glad he feels better.

Didn't do anything after work. Instead of sitting down on the couch I laid down on the bed. Out like a light. That's okay, I didn't have anything pressing to do anyway.

Beautiful out. It's actually cool in the mornings. This is what can stick around for awhile.

And now bed. Hope everyone has a good evening.

Good evening guys,
Hope everyone had a good day. Overcast here all day which kept it a little cooler. It was supposed to rain this afternoon but never did. Pretty slow day around this neck of the woods. Big news of the day came when the mail got here. My wife was concerned I was going to ruin my eyes trying to read the small font on this site using my tiny Galaxy S8 phone, so she got me a 10" diagonal tablet to web surf on. Totally unexpected, but greatly appreciated by me! I've spent most of the afternoon and this evening setting it up like I want it and getting used to it. I really like it, and it is 10 times easier on my eyes. Hope everyone has a relaxing evening!

Before I go, I have a quick question for anyone who might know. Does anyone know why adding attachments was not built into the "Personal Messaging" capability on this site? It just seems odd that you can attach things to general replies, but not in personal messages.

Security Risk. Images are easily manipulated by hackers, and CO members can unknowingly pass trojans, malware, viruses, etc. via images. The CO 'website' can address uploading of images by screening for viruses, etc. to the website, but scanning PM's for images contains a significant amount of overhead which can bog down the servers in addition to security concerns if CO members should unknowingly (and, knowingly) pass viruses, trojans, malware and the like via the Private Messaging function. The PM function is actually a separate back-end plug-in.

Good morning!! Been rainy and cool here for last week. That's ok after the long stretch of awesome weather this summer has been. This week the roofers were to start on the roof, but been delayed by the weather. The materials have been delivered and most set up on the roof. We bought a new gas range when we were on the US27 motor tour in St Johns. Wife had given upon getting this particular range that she liked. It wasn't available anywhere we checked and wasn't being made due to Covid. So we gave up on it, but there in St Johns is a Appliance store so we found one there. So, anyway we went down and picked it up yesterday. My son bought a "motorcycle" trailer from a relatives estate. It is enclosed and very nice but a odd size- sorta narrow but he got it for $700.00- great deal. Anyway towed it with our '10 Impala in 3rd gear at 62MPH and did great. Last time I towed my utiilty trailer with the car it acted like there was a anchor attached to it- jerky, bouncy, this trailer tows easy. So I have to convert this range to LP gas from Natural Gas, then run a gas line in the basement above the suspended ceiling thru floor to the range location. We both hate the electric range there now. Ok That's what's going on here- have a good one guys!!

Good morning everyone,

Greg - Good luck with the range conversion and installation!

Overcast here too, I think we're supposed to get some rain. That's ok though, no big plans today, outdoor or otherwise. Hope everyone has a great day!

Did and LA turn-a-round from the lake [cemetery duty called]

Yesterday my guys trailer ed in lumber that the lumber yard had drop out by the main road. It's narrow path around the bottom of the hill to the lake, So they hitched a trailer to a Gator and had to make several trip getting ready to start this morning. From 8;00 a.m to 10:00 a.m. When I left they had 2 walls up and were working on the third

Mike, Bring Tiger up for a swim and drown the fleas

Hi everyone.

Beautiful out. Went to Walmart and when I came out it was like a sauna. I guess because the sun was hitting the front wall and the pavement.

Jamesbo I'm not sure some of that crowd up there would appreciate a dog of the unwashed to be swimming in their lake. Although, once the dog is in the lake he becomes washed, so I might just come on up.

Greg how funny you can't find your stove anywhere, but then on a drive you find it by accident. Good for you. Glad the roof is finally getting started.

So my friends had a big blond lab and lost him some months ago, and now they are looking to get a puppy. A lab of course. He wants to name it Zora. My friend is a big Corvette fan. I said Zora sounds like a cartoon character. His wife probably wants to name it Twinkles or something like that. They haven't gotten one yet, I hope they check out the pound before they go to a breeder. The Blond's name? Bullitt. Not Bullet like Roy Rogers' dog, Bullitt like the car chase.

Speaking of Chevy, I sometimes look at a Tri Five forum and I posted a question about my Granddad's 57. It was a two door sedan in Sierra Gold and Adobe Beige, was a Bel Air but had short moldings on the tops of the fins and plain hubcaps. I said, here's what I saw in a picture taken around 1960. You know what they all said? We need pictures. Really? If they saw a picture, they would see exactly what I just said. I suppose that goes on here, too, but I haven't noticed. Then they get into a discussion about whether Sierra Gold was offered on the 210. I said hello, it clearly says Bel Air on the sweepspear. Oh that could have been changed. I said, Grandpa bought the car new it wasn't changed. Oh then we need pictures. It's like I asked a question on a Merry Go Round.

One more then the weekend. I suspect I'll be in inspection tomorrow. That other guy was announcing to anyone passing by that the loops on his mask were making his ears hurt, and he would probably get an ear infection from that, and won't be in tomorrow. What a dick.

Okay gonna clean up around the house a little then hit the sack. If it doesn't rain this weekend I got big plans for the outside. Have a good evening everyone.

The roofing guys came yesterday. Wow, they are something. Six guys who appear to have no fear of heights! It was rainy on and off yesterday and they managed to strip and re-shingle 2 parts of the roof going up to the peaks. That was the smartest way to do it the way the weather has been so there is not a huge area all at once with no shingles on it at all. I am impressed. This building company has 2 dual axle enclosed trailers that they work out of, a big dual axle dump trailer and at least 2 big trucks to pull them. I was a little apprehensive as I didn't know these guys- only heard about them from a ad on the radio. When they come they have everything they need. I am reminded that roofing is definitely a young mans job!! Makes me tired watching them. I got the new gas range installed, works good. Have been thinking about putting the Olds away for the winter but it seems too early.. Hey I can't believe it is the 19th anniversary of 911! How time flies. What a terrible event.

Good morning everyone.

There's a break in the action, thought I'd weigh in early. Surprise surprise I'm at my desk today. That other guy must have gotten a miracle cure for his pseudo ear aches.

Greg that's a good roofing group for you. When I had a roof put on my house some years ago I knew it would be loud and my dogs would freak out, so I took them to the kennel for the day. It really was loud in the house. It was a nice day and they finished up in one day. My house isn't as tall as yours but they too were fearless it seemed.

Turns out one of the Chevy forum guys is one of our own. Hope I didn't insult him. He had a good point, the dealer could have made changes to the car on Granddad's whim. I'm going to take pictures of the pictures in the photo album, maybe someone can figure it out for me.

Chance of rain all weekend, but not a big one. I want to see if I can get that new Cutlass to run. It's only been sitting 12 years. Got a few other things to do outside as well. Going back to Mom's next weekend.

After the attacks 19 years ago, and no planes were flying, we spent days at work just looking at the airplanes. They were parked and we sat and watched to make sure no one went up on them. Very eerie. I remember my Mom calling me to tell me what was going on. I was sleeping and usually turned the phone off, but I heard the answering machine in the other room so I picked up the phone. It was around this time, too, about 830ish.

Okay back on our heads. Hope everyone has a good Friday, we should be done in a couple hours. Wouldn't mind departing a little early today.

Its definitely cooled off here. I'm making preps to store some things for Winter and get other stuff ready to go. Sunrise, sunset.

I Would love to hear that the Cutlass that sat for 12 years came back to life.

Good morning guys,
Remembering 9/11 is always emotional for me. On that day I was camped at about 10,000 ft. northwest of Crested Butte, Colorado, blackpowder elk hunting. Because of the ruggedness of the terrain, we could not get cell service or even a radio station. I had left the exact coordinates of where we would be camped, and the phone number of the local DNR with my wife, and told her if there was an emergency to call the DNR and ask if they would come find me. After the attacks my work called my home and told my wife I needed to report ASAP. My wife explained my the my situation to my supervisor, then called the DNR. That evening a couple of Rangers found us and explained what had happened, and why I needed to head for home as soon as possible. We immediately packed up and headed for home. After driving straight through, when I walked in the house, my wife and 7 and 8 year old daughters were waiting for me. After hugs, my 7 year old looked up at me with tears in her eyes and asked, "Dad, they're not going to attack St. Louis are they?" I will never forget that look of fear in her eyes, and I never looked at my job the same way again. It was personal for me from that day forward!

I worked in the private sector for Microsoft prior to 9/11. I had been working on a customer engagement for Merrill Lynch (222 Broadway, NYC) six months. I was staying @ The Marriott WTC South Tower, most of my colleagues were staying @ Battery Park. Two weeks prior to 9/11 I was told to transition to Raritan, NJ @ Johnson & Johnson IT headquarters. The week prior to 9/11 I moved into The Millenium Hilton next door to Trinity Church (across the street from the WTC). I moved out of The Millenium the weekend prior to 9/11. The week of 9/11 I was in Raritan, NJ. The morning of 9/11 I received a Microsoft Messenger text from a colleague @ Merrill Lynch stating an aircraft flew into the WTC - this was almost exactly 8:46am. I told a couple colleagues of mine @ Johnson & Johnson. I thought it was probably a light aircraft - which has happened before. A person I had dinner with @ The Millenium the week prior to 9/11 sent me pictures he had obtained after 9/11 from the manager of The Millenium. The bar & dining room where we had dinner was blown apart. Had I been residing @ the WTC I would have been directly beneath the South Tower when the 1st aircraft struck. I daily left the WTC @ 8:45am to walk the 4-5 blocks from the WTC to 222 Broadway (Merrill Lynch) to arrive @ 9:00am. There isn't enough space in this post to explain the devastation to my friends, the lost colleagues from Microsoft, Accenture, etc. - most of whom were residents of NYC. Needless to say I wasn't flying back to NC after 9/11 since there was a nationwide ground stop. I had a National Car Rental and drove back to NC via I-95. It struck very personal to me.

Hey guys,
Here's a link to the best article I've read on the role my Agency played in the events that unfolded after 9/11,and why it was "all hands on deck" after the attacks occurred. Just thought you might find it interesting in light of the anniversary.

Norm - What can I say except I am sorry for friends and colleagues you lost that day. We'll never forget, it's burnt into our brains and our souls! I just hope the younger generation remembers and recognizes the constant threat that is still out there.

I'm not holding my breath for the younger generation to remember and/or recognize any threats. IMO, every single male in the United States must serve a minimum of two years of military service prior to reaching their 25th birthday - every single male. No one is excluded - period.

Dream,

Very interesting article, thanks for sharing

Norm, Face it we're getting old and out of touch with the masses. Only 2 people on CO apparently knew who Diana Riggs was

James - You're welcome!

Norm - I think your suggestion for some minimum military service is an excellent one. It would give everyone much more appreciation for the challenges and tribulations our servicemen and women face. I don't think the majority of those who haven't served, or worked closely with the military, really have a clue as to the hardships they have to deal with.

I believe the absolute greatest majority have no self discipline & do not take ownership for their actions; albeit, they have no respect for themselves and they have no respect for others. They lack empathy. The majority are liars, cheaters & thieves.

James - I really enjoyed watching The Avengers when it was on T.V. Diana was a hottie! She made a fine Mrs. Bond, as well. RIP Diana...

James - I may have grown up as a Free Love, Peace & Goodwill Towards Man, Vietnam Draftee of the '60s but I believe a six foot 2x4 across the skull would help align the masses. Line 'em up.
