The *NEW* Good Morning Thread!
Good morning everyone,
Well I'm pleased as can be that my phone works the way it should and is compatible with the CO website. Not that I used it for CO access or posting. I never realized there was an option like that since my photo uploads are strictly done with my desktop puter. And just for the sake of clarity, I pressed the 'Take Photo' option and it guided me through the necessary steps to take and install the photo. Worked like a charm
Must be you guys overthinking your technology....
Jim - Yes sir, I have seen big John play helicopter golf but that was back in the day. IIRC he's quite a long ball hitter and that's one of the things they used to focus in on. Never followed his love life and honestly whether he's on his first or 5th wife doesn't matter to me. As far as curling - no, curlers don't throw their brooms. They have been known to slam them on the ice and I've seen a few that got broken. The sport tries to minimize that as it's not in the sportsmanship role the game is spoda model. To make the curlers aware of how serious this is, the CCF and WCF both imposed rules that if the curler broke a broom through a temper tantrum they couldn't play anymore, even with a team mates spare broom. If on the other hand the broom broke as a result of product failure (no tantrum involved) the broom is allowed to be replaced and the game carries on. BTW, these broom aren't exactly cheap. Good ones range upwards of $180.00
Jouni - You're right in the ball park of where we were 2 weeks ago for temps. Fun isn't it? No photoshop on that picture. Actually it's one of the better color combinations I've seen although it looks like someone just got glad hands on a bucket of paint and started splashing it around. And as I pointed out earlier (and Norm followed up on) it was Thomas Ulsrud who made this style of flamboyant colors popular with curling. He started with wearing the Norwegian flag, and then progressed from there. Every time his team would show up for a major competition everyone held their breath to see what the 'new look' would be that time around. They've had almost a dozen different color swatches to wear IIRC, and that includes team jackets. Lately Norway has taken to traditional curling pant color (black) but it's not Thomas' team. Thomas, like Niklas Edin has been plagued by injury and surgeries so I don't see him in the playing role much longer. Likely he'll step into coaching, much like David Murdoch (another European curling legend) has done.
Norm - Nope, not so. Sierra Sill has been sold in the US and Canada long before that 'other legislation' which is modeled after Colorado. I've tried the stuff and it actually works. I have no idea if you could take the capsules and smoke em in your bong.
Yeah, I know the history of Loudmouth clothing. They are very colorful and catch the eye. I looked on line for their offering of curling pants and they don't exist, so I can only imagine those worn by team Norway are custom, or they're golf pants. They're not cheap anyway.
Dan - That sucks for the Dr. to cancel on you. Did they at least re-schedule you for a day sooner than later? With luck your snow day will also get cancelled.
Paul - Yup, good advice. I have to go out this morning to the dentist and have a new crown installed. So far it looks like the roads here aren't as bad as they could be. Can't remember if your car has a 350 or 455 in it. I do know the 455's had some issues with running hot right from the factory. Mine was running hot (it's a 350) and I found the cause was timing and also the radiator is crudded up and not allowing coolant to flow through and cool. I'm replacing it with a 3 core that I have in the shed. Less expensive than trting to re-core the old 2 core one.
Well anutter late start to the day. Good thing I don't have to work or I'd meet myself coming home in the afternoon....

The Norwegian curling team drew international attention to the company, and to themselves, at the 2010 Winter Olympics by wearing Loudmouth's "Dixie-A" pants with red, white, and blue diamonds as a uniform.[3]

You can see the same image by simply reducing the size of your desktop Browser screen until it becomes smaller & smaller and you'll see as the real estate (space) becomes smaller, the Take Photo active element will appear. Did you try this Allan? Does it work on your Windows Phone?
Jouni, what Jim is trying to say in big words is to be more clear about what is being written so it avoids confusion.
Norm, you're getting excited over not much of anything. I was simply replying to your suggestion that the Take Photo option isn't properly configured for hand held devices. I found it worked quite well. And yeah, it was hard to follow your description in the post you made to Jouni. Someone needs a snickers....
Apparently yes.
But really it's not a big deal.
Good thing this is done.

Hi everyone.
Day started out interesting. Sat in almost an hour of accident traffic. Seems a pedestrian was hit and killed(on the expressway) right about at my exit and during the ensuing investigation one of the cops was hit by a passing car. All lanes blocked for the foreseeable, so I called my lead to tell him the good news. Got him out of bed. Hm. I said if you're not there then it doesn't matter. He said he'd let someone know. We're all starting at 4 tomorrow so we can avoid the bad weather.
I know there isn't much one can do for ice, but I am going to swap out for the black truck for tomorrow. At least with 4 wheel drive I can get off onto the grass and get somewhere. That is if I can get around all the cars that try that and get stuck.
As for the basement, that's a lot of info for the question, do you think my wall will fall down. It's a block foundation, 7ft ceiling, about 3ft is above ground. The bow is inward. The wall is 23ft across and the problem goes around the corner, because the cracks have continued there. It only leaks a small bit but it needs to not leak at all. It used to be a finished basement and I'd like to re-finish it and get some use out of it.
Well gonna go run a couple errands and pick up the truck, then wind down early for the evening so I can get up at 2. Hope everyone is having a good Monday.

Mike, You're the tire expert.. My Chevy 2500 4X4 needs a new set. I ran Goodyears forever, then Firestone then Yokohama then Firestones.again Haven't had a set of Michelins [except on my Vista Cruiser] since I ran them on my Austin Healey 3000 years ago
I never go muddling but the cemetery can get a little wet
What do you run on your 4X4

Mike, I doubt your wall will fall down IIRC ( I used to work with a bricklayer when I was younger) there is mesh inserted in the horizontal rows about every 4 courses. I don't know if they filled the cinder block holes with concrete or not. Your plan to dig around the perimeter and seal it from outside is a good one. If you're doing that and the house needs to have a sump installed that's a fair bit of work jack hammering the interior to install it too. One way to avoid that is to have proper grading around the outside of the house so water sheds away from the wall. I used clay for back fill at our house and let it settle, then added more till I had the proper grade. Never had a problem with wall structure.
Jamesbo I had to read that twice. I didn't know Austin made chariots. I have Michelin X on my truck. They cost 1000 for the set but they wear like iron and grip good. And being Michelins they give a good ride. They are by far the best tire you can buy for light trucks.
I have a tractor with an end loader and a backhoe. It isn't a big one so it will take a little while. I forgot to say the house is a walk out basement. So no sump pump needed. I don't believe the blocks are filled, nor do I see any mesh anywhere around there.
You know Norm I'm really glad you showed up.
Got the truck at home now so I'm ready for snow mania. More importantly I have bread and milk and I'm not going anywhere near the grocery store. Got some firewood in the dogmobile I need to bring in so I'm all set for the stove.
Okay meatloaf.

Like Glenn, methinks I'll just say "Good Day" and back away...you guys are way over my head with the phones and stuff, I just curse my miserable Apple POS every time I have to use it. As for foundation stuff, no Mike, I don't think your wall is going to fall in. Your little backhoe attached to the tractor will be fine, take things nice and slow and you'll be okay.
Mike - A sump pump will continually remove pooling water at the base of your home to help eliminate further water/moisture. Since your home is already constructed and apparently you do have an issue with exterior wall cracks, they most likely resulted from soil under & against the wall settling/shifting over time. Since you're going to go through the trouble, labor/expense of 'fixing' your wall, there are methods for installing a sump pump on the exterior side of your basement wall - as an option. And, the best time to install a sump pump is when you've excavated the soil from around the wall perimeter.
I think we need basic questions answered though.
(1) How much of a 'bow' are we talking about here? Does the bow in the wall intrude into the interior of the basement about 3", 4", 5", 6", 1', 2', 3' - how large of a bow are we talking about here?
(2) Does the bow extend from top to bottom of the wall or primarily at the top of the wall or the bottom of the wall?
(3) Is it a gradual bow along the entire area of the wall or more like a 'punch' in the wall (so-to-speak)?
(4) Highly doubtful the wall will fall down.
(5) Forget about talking about codes for a minute. Let's just say though, if they used 8"x8"x16" [CMU], they would/should have an overlapping pattern; and, they should have rebar installed through them with concrete poured in the centers of the CMU holes upward to the sill plate of your home. Depending on the codes at the time, they would/should have employed wall ties every 3-4 tiers to assist in reducing CMU shifting.
(6) What's your intention here?
a) Do you want to 'remove' the bow in the wall and replace the wall where it is bowed?
b) Are you only interested in addressing a leaking/cracked wall? This can be addressed from either the outside-in or the inside-out. The direction you choose really depends on the amount of current damage, do you want to abate the 'problem' or simply 'scab' the wall to reduce further damage.
c) You have not said if you have any moisture or water seepage below grade at the base of the exterior wall area. If you have no water seepage, pooling this is simple; yet, 'generally' speaking when an exterior wall bows and/or shifts, it's the result of water shifting the soil allowing the wall to move. Many folks dig out (as others have suggested) a trench about 2'-3' on the outside of the exterior wall and form up a 'berm' wall to eliminate further destruction of the buckling basement wall.

Norm it isn't quite that bad, but it's noticeable. Really the bow is in the middle of the wall, and maybe a couple feet on either side is not bowed. The leakage is at the base of the wall. It isn't a lot, but water will trickle to the middle of the floor where there's a low spot and pool in the middle of the room. My plan is to have the wall removed and rebuilt, so the wall is stable and there is no leak. I want to put down a nice floor, carpet or otherwise, and insulate and sheetrock the walls. I'll take a picture tomorrow and see if the problem will show up. Thanks for all your help. That video wouldn't load btw.
Jamesbo if I had a backhoe like that I'd just pick up the whole house. He must have taught this guy how to load without ramps.
And now off to bed. 0200 is gonna be early. But the good news is that unless we're completely socked in, I get to have lunch at the Awful house when we get out.

Good evening everyone.
Looks like we're in for another dump of snow tomorrow, supposed to hit just in time for morning rush hour. Glad I've got the 4runner on days like that. We're only a few inches of snow away from breaking a January snowfall record. Yay?
My Cutlass has a 455 in it and I put in an aluminum radiator with a pair of electric fans. When everything is working properly, the temperature cycles properly and it stay under 200. I have had a few local friends say that BBO tend to run warmer and not to worry.
Dan, sorry to hear about your back. Hope you get to the doctor soon.
Jim, I know you were asking Mike, but I've got Hankook Dynapro AT-M on my 4runner. Can't say I've been offroad much beyond gravel/dirt roads. I've got a dedicated set of winter tires for the snowy months.
Have a great Tuesday everyone!

Allan, they couldn't re schedule me for a day earlier because that would have been Sunday (1/27), so I have to wait until they get back into the office and let them call me for a new date. We will be getting some of your wind chills down here, Weds. through Friday a.m. Supposed to be -25° to -35°, yikes I've never seen that here. Southern Michigan may dip down to a -40° for the wind chill. Dang, hope that my vehicle will start when I get out of work Weds and Thursday nights. That pic of the bowed in wall is very close to what I had in my last house. I wasn't going to put the money into it to make it good, just too much $$$.

Two suggestions to address and abate this issue:
(1) If you do not already have roof rain gutters, install rain gutters around your home and pitch the roof rain water well away from your home; and,
(2) Install a french drain around the exterior of your home and pitch the french drain away from your home.
mawn'in
Well spose to have ice.
With the Stupor Bowl coming to town this town is gonna be a mess.
Mike, I gonna agree with Norm, Step 1 is getting the water away from where it's coming in. Gutters and/or a french drain would help When [if] you install a french drain you could get a better idear of WTF is going on with the blocks. If you were married, your wife would say "Weren't you gonna repair the blocks in the sea wall last year?"
My bud Donny jess called we gonna go for our monthly fried chicken livers lunch with pole beans and mashed taters [fyi Norm Donny is my bud that looks after 300 engines at the golf course. ]
Have a great day Olds friends

Good morning everyone,
Yesterday went well. The new crown went in and I wasn't there for more than the allotted time. The gum area around the crown is a little tender but should be fine in a week or two. Just when it was getting back to normal after the temp crown install, it's back to needing some Advil or Extra Strength Ibuprofen for a few days. I've found that with diabetes it takes a lot longer to heal from wounds than before. I've asked why and even Doctors don't have the answer. Go figure. Hahahaha, pretty soon I won't have any original (unmolested) teeth left in my mouth.
Made a nice pizza for supper yesterday. Extra cheese, Chorizo sausage slices, green bell pepper, and those wonderful anchovies. It was absolutely delicious.
Jouni - You and I must be getting younger. Didn't wake up today till my insulin alarm after 8:00. Since you're off from work, grab some of your 'friends' and head out to the sauna
Dan - That's a bummer that you can't get in to see the Doctor any sooner. With luck it will be sooner than later. Living with back pain is not fun. Yikes! You're definitely getting some nasty cold down there. IIRC the lake effect also gives you moist air? That would make it feel even colder I think. Stay bundled up. I'm sure your winter tires will work well for you.
Paul - I saw on the news that TO got slammed, and you're right on the money about winter driving. Give extra time and best of all, call in sick
. Do you have to use any of the 400 highways in your commute? I saw a show called Heavy Rescue 401. You may have heard or seen it? They show the 401, 402 etc and I can't believe how busy and fast those roads are. It's like a nightmare on steroids. Perhaps living in that zone you get used to it after awhile? As for the 455 in your Cutlass, everyone I know who has one says they do tend to run a bit on the hot side, especially in stop and go driving. Did you install a coolant reservoir just in case? My 95 Regency Elite had a problem with cooling when the electric fan crapped out. It happened in winter and colder temps. I didn't even know it bit the dust because most of my commute is 60km/hr to and from work. But then I got into some stop and go driving one night during a snowstorm and the gage showed the temps creeping up to an uncomfortable level. There's wasn't a whole lot I could do at that time. When I got home I tested the fan with direct 12V from the battery and nada. Time for a new one....
Jim - Enjoy your lunch with Donny. Pole beans and mashed taters sounds good. Fried chicken livers? Not so much...
Adrian - Congrats to Allegra and Minnette on starting the new school year. I can't believe how tall Min is getting!

Well we got about 14" of the white stuff here- nice fluffy stuff. It's the first time I've rode a snowmobile and actually have too much. I actually fell over just crawling along, sort of like the guy on Laugh-in on the tricycle. Who remembers that?? You can get around in the trails but you're pushing it. I was exhausted after a 80 mile ride. The weather forecast said the snow would start yesterday morning and they were right. I saw it start and decided to go to town to get some groceries early before it accumulated, We don't have a 4 wheel drive vehicle, just a '10 Impala and a '02 Ford Van. The Impala is better in the snow and the van is absolutely worthless. Well it started to pile up so fast, I'm guessing about a inch every half hour and you couldn't see- snoblind! Anyway we made it back OK. I think I am going to have to get a 4x4 or at least a AWD vehicle. There is more snow here than where we moved from.
Mike, I don't know anything about foundations/leaks etc. Here in Michigan we are always seeing ads on TV about B'Dry foundation repairs, etc. Probably a big business in this state being basically surrounded by water.
I really don't know much about phones/pictures/this site. I tried to post a picture here off my phone and couldn't do it. I'm sure it was operator failure.
Take care all.

Hi everyone.
Our start early and miss the storm idea sort of backfired. The storm missed us. We left around 11. Tomorrow it's the usual 6am start, when the roads will be frozen. Great idea.
Of course getting off early facilitated going to Awful house.
Gee Greg, 14" of snow? I'd be twitching for sure. I don't miss that at all. What's funny is I have a 4 wheel drive now, but never did when I lived up there. Not many people did actually. We just knew how to drive in the stuff and were careful. Didn't even think about it really. Unlike down here. The soccer moms pile their 4x4 Suburbans into the ditch with four wheels spinning.
The wind picked up and it's cold as a mother out. I don't have any plans to go anywhere so I think I'll start up the stove early and just hang out with Tiger.
Our start early and miss the storm idea sort of backfired. The storm missed us. We left around 11. Tomorrow it's the usual 6am start, when the roads will be frozen. Great idea.
Of course getting off early facilitated going to Awful house.

Okay here is a picture of the basement wall. Look at the two by fours in the center of the room and you can get a good idea of the deflection. I'd say it's a good couple inches.

The problem started because there was a tree in the front yard about 6 feet from the front of the house. The roots pushed on the wall, and now that the tree isn't there the ground is shifting, presumably because the roots are rotting and collapsing and of course the moisture.

What's funny is the basement leaks more when I don't clean out the brush and whatnot from the front of the house. I would have guessed the opposite. I have gutters on the roof that do a good job. A friend of mine suggested I put plywood on both sides of the wall and run lag bolts through both sides, and then tighten the bolts until the wall trues up. Then just leave the plywood and frame around it inside and tar it on the outside before backfilling. Not sure that's a terrific idea.
My neighbor's house has done the same thing. He took two metal beams and attached them to the floor and the joists overhead, right up against the block. I don't think he had issues with water coming in. I could do that but since I need to fix leaks, I might as well redo the whole wall.
I did get that video to play. Pretty interesting. Funny, I'm getting a settling crack in the drywall coming out of a corner of a doorway in my bedroom. I'm not even worried about that right now.

The missus had her dental appt today to put in her permanent crown. I went to the pharmacy to pick up my scripts since it's only a mile away and I had all kinds of time. The pharmacy has an on line app that I used to place the order, so I naturally thought once I sent it in that it would be good. Hahaha, nope. The order got messed up. They shorted me a box of insulin and test strips which I didn't notice at the time as they whisked everything into a plastic bag for me. I also took in a bottle of script they processed a month ago. I had some brand name pills with me to compare with the pharmacist. Turns out the charged me for brand name and gave me generic pills. To compensate for that they refunded me the entire amount which I applied to the new order. Somehow I thought I was paying too little because I know test strips are expensive. I called them when I got home and asked about the mess up. Guess what? The on line order doesn't stay in the system after it's processed. That's really silly not to have a record of the order somewhere, especially with the electronic capability nowadays. On top of the confusion, it also turns out no one in the pharmacy knows how the app works or what to suggest for future orders. One recommendation they gave was to speak directly to the store manager and provide details he could forward to their IT department.
I got a call from the missus while I was paying the pharmacy. She was done and only 45 minutes from walking in the door. Sadly the crown she got was not the right size and leaves about 1mm of base tooth not covered. Her dentist temporarily installed the defective crown and ordered another one which should be ready in a week.
Dan - What a relief! I sure hope the snow abates before then and you have no issues getting there. Yeah, I was a little shocked when I saw that. I saw that on my phones news feed and did a screenshot, then cropped it. Again, I used the CO handheld app to install the picture and it worked without a hitch.
I wasn't expecting it to be so big though. Good luck with the appointment, I hope there's something good that comes out of it.
Greg - 80 miles on a snow sled?? Holy mackeral you must be a die hard. I'm guessing that's a good 4 hours or more? You must have to carry spare gasoline for the sled unless it has a huge tank. I wouldn't know because my experience with sleds is limited to what my neighbor let me drive when I was around 15. His Dad was a cop so we didn't get away with much. As far as the phone thing goes, maybe I'm just lucky with mine. What brand do you use?
Jim - Yes-sir, that's a horrible day. I wonder if the guy driving the lift lived.
How much longer you figger to be on the DL? Or are the greens too soggy to whack ol whitey anywho?
Bangers and mash with peas for dinner. Honest to Gawd, the package actually says 'Bangers' instead of sausage. First time I've ever seen that.

Gee Allan I have a good recommendation, don't use the app anymore. Someone has a record of that somewhere, but if they admit they don't know how to use it then they don't know what it's doing in the first place.
Jamesbo I have seen those rods. My only concern is even with tar over the plywood on the outside, being underground the plywood will eventually rot and then there will be slack in the rods and the wall will become unstable again. I had the bright idea of eliminating the wall and resting the front of the house on a 20ft shipping container. But those things are 9ft tall and I'd have to dig down an extra 2ft, not to mention the inordinate amount of work getting it in there and level. It would have been the tornado room.
Had my Dad's favorite meal tonight. Tomato soup and bologna sandwich. He liked Spam also but I'm not having that.
