Last home (3-story Polish raised flat built 1901) I owned/renovated (Milwaukee, WI) I found an old coffee can filled w/ used razor blades sitting on the lower wall plate beneath the medicine cabinet directly under the razor blade slot. It was filled & then some. I also found two empty pint bottles of Kessler Whiskey buried between a couple walls & a lithographed post-card dated 1920-something on the bottom of one wall. Good chance Ray & others have found interesting items I'm sure.
I would love to some time get a straight razor shave at the barber shop. With the hot towels and the aftershave and all that. I don't know if anyone even does that anymore. I should find out.
The barber shop I frequent uses a hot towel, a straight razor, and shaving soap(?) to scrape the back of my neck. I was surprised at that, and amazed at how smooth it came out. I suppose they did face shaves as well but I didn’t investigate that.
Buy my scaffolding or rent from a equipment rental agency. I have (I think) eight sections. Each section roughly 5'H x 7'L x 5'W. Three vertical sections (15') would get you to a workable height of ~20'-22'. I have (I think) eight HD (either 8" or 10" diameter) locking wheels. EDIT: Actually, I think I have ten locking wheels.
That's what I need right there. Actually I thought I could drive the big truck into the hangar and then set up a ladder in the back. That would get me quite a ways up. I've got hundreds of hours using one of those Skyjackers. We use those in the hangar to work around the airplanes.
Jamesbo I was at a friend's house the other day and he told me I should use Seafoam. So I guess since two people have told me about it I should try it.
So changing oil in the Fiat today was a non-starter. Someone had buggered up the drain plug so a wrench wouldn't stay on, and the plug was in so tight nothing I tried could even bust it loose. So I'll get a new plug and then -somehow- get the old one out. I know I will destroy it so I'll get the plug first.
I get to sleep in tomorrow. Yay. The pleasure will be short lived because it's Walmart day. Don't know what else I'll do. But it's gonna be nice out.
You'll soon find out while standing on a ladder attempting to work (safely). Best of luck with that. No thanks. Your ankles will feel like jelly in several hours.

Jim - Love seeing your Jeep, glad you are having fun with it!
Long, but very fun car day yesterday. Got to the judged show in DeSoto about 7:45 and there was still frost in the shade, but it rapidly warmed into a perfect day with an afternoon high of about 75°. The Show was at the VFW Hall and grounds there, and all the proceeds went to Veterans with Spinal Cord injuries. Great turnout, the promoter said there were 237 cars and 56 trucks. Format was Top 75 cars/Top 15 trucks, all years/makes/models. I was fortunate to crack the Top 75. That's the end of judged shows for this season. After the show was over I went to the cruise-in at Culvers in Festus. I only stayed about an hour because I wanted to get home before it got too dark. Hating to see the season getting close to the end, next weekend will be the last hurrah!

Beautiful day here. Went to Walmart late this afternoon and had to fight our way through the unruly. Worked a little bit on the blue van when we got home. Nice day to just relax.
Chris that's a cool picture of Mel's Diner. There was a Mel's in the Sands hotel in Reno that I loved going to. It's closed and the hotel is sold and some new hoity toity place is going in.
Jamesbo those wheels need to be painted the same green as the Jeep.
Work tomorrow. Nothing extraordinary at work this week, just hope everything goes smoothly.
Heads up I have had a few strange things with the cellular service today here in Wisco
People calling from new formats Skype or similar, weird numbers, self deleting messages... the folks I contacted that were involved with some of the calls trying to reach me said the same jinky shizzy happenning....
I shut'r down. Hope this is not an indication of getting closer to the November changes close at hand.
Jim when I see the Jeep and understand some of the history with you and some more members I appreciate this version of Johnny Cash's story song Alternate of Drive On

Yes, the promoter of this particular Show always gives out very cool plaques for awards. Did you notice how the yellow hotrod in the Diner picture looks incredibly similar to the car ornament on the plaque?
I'm asking because you mentioned a "Mel's Diner" in Reno. Were "Mel's Diners" a franchise at one time, or was the one in Reno just a one off?
The original Mels (est. 1947, San Francisco) was/is named "Mels drive-in" & was the 1st drive-in operated restaurant. The original expanded to became a chain. Mels drive-in was featured in American Graffiti. "Mels Diner" (est. 1991) is located in Florida - separate distinct entity from "Mels drive-in".
FWIW - you walk in-doors to sit at a Diner. The original Mels drive-in was just that - a drive-in restaurant in which you did not have to get out of your car but a car-hop attended your vehicle.
Complicating these two distinct franchises is THE ORIGINAL MELS DINER was opened in the Sands Hotel under a different name altogether e.g. THE ORIGINAL MELS DINER (Original Mels). There was a disruption in naming convention between father & son which let to a distinction in naming, but the Mels in Florida is separate & distinct from the Mels in California & the Sands Hotel (owned by the originators of Mels drive-in - sorta, LOL).

Slow start to the morning. I've got 3 at first break. Not setting any records.
Chris the sign on Mel's in the hotel said Mel's The Original. I'm not sure where that puts it in the hierarchy of the Mel's universe, but it was done up in a 50s motif and had pictures of the original drive in on the walls. Good food, and convenient. Since I stayed in that hotel I'd just go downstairs.
Gonna be nice all week and warm up a bit. Not to Kenneth's level but warm for around here this time of year. I don't think we've had rain this month so far.
G'day Keith! How you goin' ? No I'm not Australian but I practice that.
Okay gonna grab a snack and sit around some more. Same wall guy this week, for over a month. He's a nice guy, but slow. My robot guy is training a new guy(to the robot) today so things will be slower anyway. Eh, why get all up in a bunch on Monday.

Mike - You're correct. I first stayed at the Sands w/ our family & stayed at the Sands until its demise (1996), a very sad day, indeed. You used to be able to get a voucher for "The Original Mels" when playing in the casino - e.g. free food!

Norm/Mike - Thanks for the responses. Norm, your history on Mel's Drive Ins, Mel's Diners, and The Original Mel's was very clear, thanks! We did not have either Mel's Drive-Ins or Mel's Diners in Battle Creek when I was growing up, and I don't remember seeing any in other parts of the state. A&W Rootbeer Drive-Ins seemed to be the predominant Drive-Ins in Battle Creek when I was growing up in Battle Creek in the 60's and 70's, there were several of them scattered around town. Sonic Drive-Ins are pretty popular here in the St. Louis area today and there are several of them.
Chris - Outside of my four paper routes when I was younger, my 1st job (1967) was the A&W Root Beer stand ~1/2 mile from our family home. I was 15 (lied about my age). I was a soda jerk. There were two windows for the car-hops - front & side. I filled the drink orders (mostly root beer, of course). Burgers, fries, hot dogs were cooked in the small kitchen in back by Mr. Ed & his wife (Lois). Food was sent up front to me, I placed the food on tray(s), pour the drinks then place them in the window(s) for the car-hop gals to distribute. The main root beer tanks were located in the basement with metal lines running upstairs to the fountain dispenser. I made the root beer, as well. Concentrated syrup in gallon containers was delivered, stored in the basement on shelves then mixed in I'd say a ~55 gallon stainless steel container. Not at all shaped like a 55 gallon drum but instead shaped more like a vat.
Congratulations on the award,
can't wait till I finish this 67 to join you at our local shows. Another 2 years or so,
I spent yesterday stripping most of the stuff off the firewall to get ready to lift the body to install the floor, I need to add the vent windows back to the doors, since I messed up and didn't measure the door opening before cutting all the rot out
Ah Norm, you were in Vegas. I stayed at the Sands Reno, which just in the last couple of years turned into the J Resort. I looked at their website and decided I didn't want to stay there. Probably was too pricey as well.
Less than an hour to lunch and I'm at 8. The new guy put two washers on one of the bolts. While that won't cause any problems, it's wrong and since it was seen it needs to be fixed. The new rule is to completely deflate the tire before taking that one bolt out and removing a washer, but I don't think they are going to do that. It's dumb. We buy dry nitrogen from some company and deflating for one bolt is incredibly wasteful. But that's what the "committee" came up with when they did a sweeping look at all the processes after the accident last month.
There used to be an A&W by my grandma's house and when we'd visit we'd always go there. My Dad always called it Dog & Suds. Not sure if that was really its name. Man what a treat. I loved the tray balancing on the window.
Addendum: Dog N Suds is a chain in and of itself. It's possible the place we went was in fact a Dog N Suds but they most definitely served A&W root beer. They were later sold and whatever company bought them sold a different root beer, so maybe Dad called it that when it first opened. Can't ask him. Maybe Mom knows.
Dog & Suds was a chain, you're right, Mike. I ate at a couple of those back in the day. They were excellent. I think they all went away sometime in the 1960s but they were excellent.
BTW, I used to make home-made root beer - stuff is delicious. Some stores, might have to look hard for it, maybe on-line(?) sell the little Hires concentrate bottles (about the size of airline booze bottles). Hmmm...I wonder if Hires is still in business?
As I recall, the seven step, or seven towel, shave I had once was,
1. Apply pre-shave treatment.
2. Apply lather.
3. Hot towel on face.
4. Shave.
5. Hot towel.
6. Cold towel.
7. Aftershave treatment.
The problem is hipsters, whose defining quality is that they have no defining qualities, have ruined barber shops just like everything else they touch. This is because their motivation is simply looking the part and seeking the approval of others, instead of being a master and receiving the approval one gives one's self once mastery is achieved. A real barber is a clean shaven man who almost looks military and wears the white coat of the barber-surgeon. He is conservative, reserved, and definitely not gay. I am not black, so I have no position to comment on black barber shops, which is a different culture. The hipster barber is some guy in a beard and man bun and tattoos and does not embody the history of the trade.
Problem is, most hair places are salons for women. A hairdresser can't wield a straight razor. Barbers view themselves as a cut above. Any good barber should do a razor neck shave. My barber hasn't given a razor face shave in years, but she and her husband, in their barbershop, used to do so. The issue is finding a barber young enough to do it well, but in the trade honestly so he has good gear and knowledge and is not just all show and no go.
Ran a known distance appleseed this weekend. Had a lot of guys shoot well. I spent 12 hours on my feet other than driving downrange in my little Tacoma hauling six people (which is a lot for that little truck). Shot out to 500 yards. Fabulous weather. We had 12 shooters, so, when we were on the fast stages, it was about 4 shots a second from the firing line in total (12 guys shooting once every 3 seconds or so), so we made the range thunder for a while. Had to show the submachine gun guys what was up with our own noise. My feet hurt, won't do much today.
The past week I've been deep trimming Azaleas. I think I have + or - ~70. Maybe I've trimmed 20? Lots of trimming going on, takes lots of time. I have four good size plants w/ large trunks next to the house I can't recall their name - were here when I purchased. They're a decent enough plant, I guess but they were planted 1/2-***. One year they caught some type of blight but recovered. They caught another blight this year & it looks like they're deader than a door nail or just about. I'm pulling them out w/ the F250 diesel tractor - have three removed one to go.
