The mother of all road trips #2 BC Canada

Day #1. We got on the road on 3:30 Tuesday afternoon which gave us a half day extra. Drove from Forest Ranch CA. to Grants Pass Or.With the top down but the heat and smoke was stifling.Forest fires all around and the temp was well over a 110 degrees We quit at 9;30 with a case of the red eye. No pictures of the first day but.

Day#2 Just north of Grants Pass lies this Victorian town of Oakland. If you like turn of the century architecture it's worth getting off I-5 and cruse the town and back streets. The town is still alive and working but is lost in time..... Tedd

And a few more plus a hot rod that was there. Damn few classic cars were see on day one and two.

The third picture is what happens when a draw bridge shuts down rush hour traffic in Portland. Cars and trucks for as far as the eye could see....Tedd

Brian,
She been talking about me again?...Tedd

We have been fighting a vapor lock problem with the Mistress. Anything much over !00 degrees and she wants to act up after shut down and restart, no problem if it's cool. I may insulate the fuel lines when I get a little time.Other than that no problems. Makes me rethink the AC thing...Tedd

Day #3 the rest of the story

Here is the rest of day #3. We spent the night of day #2 in Puyallup WA. and woke up to a nice rainy morning to get through Seattle rush hour, which last till eleven o'lock. Traffic sucks worse there than any place I have driven and I was on the road for forty three years.

First pic is the mistress wet with the top up getting loaded for the day.

Second and third are of a couple Ramblers In front of a body shop.

Forth and fifth are of a Bagged ship Whole ship is wrapped in something that looks like Ty-Vek the other is the Coast Guard Cutter at the Alaska Ferry Terminal at Ferndale WA.

A couple of guys we met were fishing for crabs and we were there when they pulled the pots. The big one is a Dungeons the little one is a red crab. They say the reds are better eating but they don't get as big.

Ferndale is another Victorian town that is now yuppie ville but the architecture and floral arrangements are a outstanding example of the 19th century.Wife got to play a piano that is left out for people to enjoy... Tedd

Ted, hope you can use this.

110 km/hr 70 mph
100 km/hr is 62 mph
90 km/hr is 55 mph
80 km/hr is 50 mph
70 km/hr is 45 mph
60 km/hr is 35 mph
50 km/hr is 30 mph.

Gas is $/liter. 3.78 L/ US gal. Quite a shocker isn't it?

I found when driving through the US that my GPS was a better speedometer than the car - i set it for MPH and was never unsure just how much over the limit I was going.

The crabs you mentioned are Dungeness...good eating for sure!

heres an easy conversion in your head, just multiply the kmh by 6.
90 is 54 mph
60 is 36 mph
etc

Actually I use my GPS in the Cutlass too because I don't think the speedo is right. Since these cars were all made when Canada highways were regulated in mph it really helps.

TRIVIA question - Remember when Canada used to have 2 speed limits on the same highway? Day/Night? What color was the daytime speedlimit sign, and what color was the nighttime sign? Also - what was the speed limit difference??

These pictures are of Fairhaven WA, it is the old part of Bellingham. I know it well as my wife & I spend a lot of time there. Hope you drove the Chuckanut Trail coming into Fairhaven.

Ferndale is north of Bellingham on the way to the border.

Enjoy your trip.

Nowhere near as confusing as the fahrenheit system! Water boils at 100 degrees and freezes at zero - simple!

I hope you have an opportunity to take in a car show locally. I think the Langley cruise in is happening one of these weekends. It's a fairly big one around here. I am envious of your road trip!

I don't know why I didn't think of that...I've noticed that my '71 Cutlass speedo is reading way high and need to confirm my speeds.

Was that Canada-wide? I don't recall ever seeing that here on the island, but we might be different that way anyhow.

The Langley Show is September 12th (Close to Vancouver) http://langleycruise-in.com/

I remember this from when i was a kid the speed limit sign was white with black letters and was 65 mph and the night one underneath was 55 mph and was black with white letters. At least that's the way it was in WI

Congrats for finding the town of Oakland Oregon. I have great grandparents in the cemetery there, but since its off the beaten track few people go to Oakland. Thank you for sharing pictures and your experiences along the way!

Day #4 about 1500 miles travled

Thanks Allen for the conversions. Less confused still bewildered.

WE are getting ready for the Quesnel car show , It's a three day event and we will be taking our Canadian friends with us, this is there first car show ever and so far it's been a blast tooling around Quesnel with them top down of cores.

Here are a few shots of his place. Nice to be able to land your float plane thirty yards from your back door. The yellow plane is his runway plane and has been rebuilt by him from the ground up, many stol parts added....Tedd

Day #4 poker run

The wife and I spent the afternoon with our friends doing the poker run. We met at the mall and shot bull over our cars for a hour with the club members, later we did the poker run stopping at many retirement homes for our cards. We ended up with a gut shot straight but had a ball doing it. Here are a few pictures of the meeting and after....Tedd

Here are a few pictures of the show some of the cars are not regularly found in the states like a Fargo or a Meteor, plus a carload of pinup girls in my ride....Tedd

Lost the picture for day 7&8

Some fool (Tedd) Left the card in the computer and forgot to put it back in the camera so day 7 & 8 are lost.

Day seven was a rest day and we hung around the house all morning then Richard an d I went to a friends house to check out his Model A pickup. After Terry found out I was a gunsmith he had me inspect a gun collection he had inherited some years back later he called another friend and i did the same for him. My kind of good day guns and cars.

Day #8 would have been a great photo day but I didn't catch the camera thing till this morning.

We are taking the inland route home and while stopping at a A&W in Princeton BC for a coffee break a car show broke out.We were the hit of the show for the 15 minutes we were there. Got bribes of free coffee and carrot cake if we would stay but had to go. Great bunch of guys and a tribute to our hobby. Pictures would have told the story better but you know the fool thing and the camera.

Smoke and ashes from here on out. So thick that in some places we couldn't see more than a 100 yards and breathing is difficult at times. We will cross over to the US. today and it looks like smoke and fire till Oregon.

So far the car has run great with only the pause off idle and cold blooded worse than normal thing. Haven't added any oil as yet but may top it off today on our next fill up, we have used a bunch of gas. More later ....Tedd

Ted:

I'm sure you are aware by now but I just came back from North Central Washington and the fires in BC and WA have made the smoke situation intolerable. Apparently 3 firefighters have lost their lives and many homes destroyed. I would turn back and take the coast home or tour Oregon. Of course if your intentions are to drive through and keep going good luck with that. Glad to hear your enjoying your trip. I hope it continues to be a great journey.

Day #9 a few pictures and remarks

Well Grumbler thanks for the pictures of the Quesnel show. Who ever did the photos is a lot better photographer than I.

We were in bad smoke all day the closer we got to Oregon the better it was .We saw many burned out structures and vehicles and it look like the military has moved in with long convoys of trucks and equipment, hope they can get a handle on this as the whole world around here is on fire.

Through all this my wife(who has been a trouper in this heat) can find something interesting to shoot a picture of. Smoke and yard art.... More tonight we got in to our motel at 11:45 and were out of here at 7:30...Tedd

Day #9 &10 and a few random shots and remembrances

This trip was blistering hot and according to my wife this will probably be our last summer time long trip, heat is not her friend. The thought has crossed my mind that AC could be in the Mistress future but the thought still upsets me to alter a car like this when so few are left out there original.

Here are a few pictures that didn't make it in the first go around

#1 is my friends getting ready for there first poker run
#2 is a future rat rod
#3 is a shot of leaving Oregon to California (Bug Station)
#4 Is hauling *** out of the smoke.

And a few more

I don't know if you know of Pateros but this is the town that burned up last year in the forest fires... Guess what it happened again this year. Here are a few shots taken of their visitor center showing their problems last year.

A few statistics and other stuff

Home at last....Well we used less than a 1/2 quart of oil which surprised me because it appears to my wife that the car leaves that much on the drip pan in the garage every time I go to town but that's a woman thing I think.

Total mileage was less than I thought we would have at 2,654 but we didn't do much wandering around on the way home because of the fires and heat.

Mileage was a pretty dismal 13 MPG. I was hoping for a better result with the new rebuilt carburetor but 13 is what we averaged last year on our 4,000 mile trip to South Dakota so that is what she gets.

And as a side note the car wouldn't start this morning (glad it happened here). Battery only showed 11.57 volts so I'm charging it as I type and will get it started so I can see if it is generator/ voltage regulator related or if the battery is giving it up. I suspect the battery but I'll see later.

In all it was a good trip, met many new car guys and gals, many new sights were seen, took one more trip off the bucket list and no problems occurred that held us from doing anything we wanted...... Lost in the fifties....Tedd
