B.O. said there were 57 states in a campaign speech.
Nobody even cared that much??
All Quayle did was say there was an "e" on the end of potato, which there can be, and the media went nuts and it's still joked about to this day.
I live in the state of confusion myself.

How many men have served as the United State's president?
And it isn't 44.

4 states DESIGNATE THEMSELVES Commonwealths, but they are recognized as US States by the Federal Govt.

At the end of the day, we go by what the Federal Govt follows.

Also, don't forget the 6 territories, which are not States: American Samoa, Fed. States of Micronesia, Guam, Midway Islands, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands.
Let's see... 50 US States + Washington DC + 6 Territories = 57.
I think Redog is trying to trip us up somehow.

I've been to the Virgin Islands when I was younger...they're just known as The Islands now.

There are 50 states. Though a state may refer to itself as a Commonwealth that does not change its designation as a state in the Union. When a state ratifies the Constitution they are a "State" in the United States of America. It means that people in that state consent to shared sovereignty with the Federal government.

Per Wikipedia other states (Vermont and Delware) occassionally refer to themselves as Commonwealths and use the term interchangeably in their state consitutions.

It's either 44 or 45.

PA, KY, MA, and VA are all Commonwealths, Texas is a Republic, and I've been reading that Rhode Island is some kind of "Provinceal Possession"

DC is also a Commonwealth, but is not a state. It has it's own laws like a state, but it's not

Well If Rhode Island is not a state then why does it say "Ocean State" on their license plates?
PA used to say "The Keystone State". Not sure if they still do.
KY says "Bluegrass State"
And TX says "Lone Star State".

Just because they claim to be a republic, commonwealth or some such other entity, it doesn't mean they are not states. Under federal law when they ratified the United States constitution they became a State.
The District of Columbia is basically forbidden from statehood because it is the nations capitol. It was decided when it was formed that the capitol would be it's own separate district so that no one state could claim to have the nations capitol within its borders so that none of the states could get jealous over its location.
