Forest fire across the canyon from my house
Came home to a forest fire today probably a little over a mile from my home .So far they (Forest Service) has at least two helicopters and three planes( ones a jet!) working it and probably some kind hand crew, we saw them land a helicopter below the tree line and we assume it was to drop off a fire crew. Here hoping they get it under control before the wind comes up or nightfall. Only the canyon between us and the fire and no roads to get to it. This could be interesting by morning.

Alls good
All though somewhat entertaining(watching it from my deck) the fire was put out in a couple hours and it became a non advent. This morning there isn't even any smoke to complain about. My hat is off for the firefighters and pilots who do this risky job, I sleep alot better just knowing there out there.
Here are a few pictures of the fire and only one of a plane. I couldn't coordinate my shutter delay with the lead needed to keep the plane in the frame.... Poor photographer .....Tedd

Glad to hear they got it out OK. Things between us are not going so well though. The Happy Camp complex around Happy Camp California has been going crazy over the last week. Attached are a few pictures from Medford Oregon looking South. I think this was last Friday. This year is the first year I've seen the newer jet retardant tankers too. The airport in Medford is the only one in the state able to take the DC 10 air tankers. Its reported that they can lay down a line of retardant 300 feet wide and one mile long. The payload is between 11,000 and 12,000 gallons. Attached is a link to a local newspaper article about them. There's also a couple smaller jets being used, but I don't remember what they're called. For the fire in Crater Lake National park they don't want to use retardant so they have amphibious planes that fly along the surface of lost creek lake picking up water to drop. This is the first year I've seen those too! John

We've got a bad one going on in my neck of the woods. Don't think it got any closer than about 5 miles but we were ready to bug out. Been going on 10 days and only 35% containment. I can't remember exact numbers but it's right around 90,000 acres and 7500 firefighters. Sure hope they get it soon.
