6.4 Earthquake near Eureka California

Thoughts and prayers for everyone that may be impacted up there. Hopefully there won't be crazy damage. I lived out there in my early twenties. Beautiful country. 6.4 is a strong jolt.

Hope everyone is ok. We have some members in CA. I wonder if they felt the rumbling?

Not sure if the link works. I'm a 200 miles south and felt nothing but it was in the early AM.

I worked in Eureka in 89 when the big one hit in San Francisco. We felt it at work. Shook our building.

I have reached out to people that I know out there still but have not been able to get thru.

I'm probably 150 miles south-east of the epicenter, slept through it like a baby. Any one heard anything a bout a tusomie(sp), that area is prone to the big wave effect...Tedd

I heard that there has been no sign of a tsunami forming.

I Had never felt an earthquake until I lived out there. For a Colorado boy it was a wth moment the first time I felt one. My place that I posted a picture of was built on thirty foot diameter redwood stump. The place would move with the earth like nothing else.

My friend lives in Carlotta.

I felt my first earthquake a few years ago, of s as lol places here in central indiana.

It was 4:30 in the morning, when both my wife and I woke up to hear the pull hinges on the entertainment center rattling. At first, we thought maybe it was a big truck, or Air Force plan (we live 25 miles from a Air Force base, it’s not uncommon for big military aircraft to rattle the house) but this was a different kind of shaking. We turned on the news to find others were commenting on the shaking. It was obvious at that point it was an earthquake.

Naturally, I had to do some reading. It turns out that the Midwest has a history of some very violent and destructive earthquakes. The New Madrid fault line is a particularly nasty one, it was last active in 1811-1812.

Due to the hard, rocky ground here in the Midwest, the shaking is much worse than a comparable earthquake elsewhere.

Comforting thoughts!!!

I'm Northeast of there and was woken up by my cell phone going off with an earthquake alert! Quote from a local talk show report: UPDATE 2 dead, 12 injuries, tens of thousands without power, gas leaks and widespread damage. CHP reporting 4 sizable cracks in the historic Fernbridge which connects to Ferndale. (picture is from Caltrans) Ferndale, a town of 1350, is landlocked for now. The quake was centered in the Pacific Ocean 12 miles west off the coast of Fortuna, CA. No tsunami risk, but there are reports of some fires and structure collapse.

I was stationed in Eureka 1976-1978 (USCG) and felt only one quake during that time...a minor one...I was in a building and it felt like someone bumped the outside of it with their car. I liked it there a lot...the redwoods are amazing. I still have a step-son who lives there and he's doing OK. They got their power back and he didn't have much damage at his place.

Thanks for the update Randy. I lived in a small town just south of Arcata called Bayside. Redwoods are just beautiful. Everyone should see them.
