My front inner fenders (68 442) have a lot of road tar built up under them and I am wondering if anyone as clean theirs and if so what is the best thing to use to clean them.

 

Many of the old timers have used turpentine to remove tar, still works today....Tedd

 

I should have specified that they are black plastic and not steel.

 

wd40, lots of it.

 

Yea, a liberal application of solvent and a putty knife. Let it soak in for a bit and scrape away.

Its lots of elbow grease, and you will get dirty.

Solvent could be diesel fuel, carb cleaner wd40 what ever works for you. Brush in on and cover well.

A little application with a heat gun might be helpful on the large chunks. Just be careful .

 

I will suggest a plastic scraper in order to preserve the plastic fender liner.

 

Great point on the plastic scraper. The reason that I am doing it is because I will be replacing the upper arm rubber cover (at the moment I am forget the correct term) and I figured it's the best time to do it. Once I took the rear bumper and cleaned the back portion and the front with Citronella out of all liquids. It worked so well I couldn't believe it. It was like using chrome cleaner that smells better.

 

Lowes has Black Jack tar and Asphalt remover in a 12.6 Oz. Spray bottle that works well and is environmentally safe.As has been mentioned,use a plastic scraper,so your plastic inner panels will not be all scratched up! Larry

 

In the past I have used charcoal lighter fluid with very good results. It was all I had on hand at the time.

 

Oven cleaner will help remove the tar as well. Plastic scrapper/plastic bristle brush/soft scotch brite pads
