Regaining camber on my 64 F85

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone here has used the Moog "problem solver" upper control arm offset shaft kits to regain camber adjustment. I am running 15" wheels and 205 70 tires and I have the shafts tight up against the stops and not enough camber adjustment in the wheels. I think the wheel/tire combo is too tall and brings the suspension out of adjustment range.

Another problem I ran into was Moog part number K5250 is a 1965 and up application [the McQuay-Norris cross reference number is FA1019]. My question is; What is the difference between 64 and 65? I have found 65 to be the cut off point.. Anyone fix the camber problem? Any suggestions? Would I have to swap over to a 65 upper control arm? Thanks in advance.. Cheers, Mike

Have you replaced the springs, bushings, and ball joints on the front? These will all affect your camber adjustment. If not then I would do that before buying an aftermarket control arm shaft.

BTW, you mentioned that you think your tires are too tall, what size tires are supposed to be on your car?

Hi Stan and Olds64,

Thanks for the replies. I found my stock size to be old time tire size; 7.35 x 14. This roughly translates to the "slightly newer" size, E78/14. The closest I could get in a "modern" tire size is P-metric 185/75R14. The 185 tire is 7.28" wide and a whisker under 25" tall at 24.92". The 205/70R15's on the front of my F85 now, are 8.07" wide with a height of 26.29" tall. This is quite a difference. I suppose I'm going to have to go with a 15" tire that has a 25" height, if my theory is right. A popular size would be either 215/60R15 at 25.18" tall or 205/65R15 at 25.5" tall. The back is going to get a set of 255/60R15's soon.. these measure 27" tall with 10.03" of tread. Maybe I'll stick with the 205/65's, as they have a bit more sidewall ... I'll keep yous posted on the outcome.

My ball joints are recent, and the ride height is fine, as the car has 94k on it... It does not look like anything is sagging. The offset shaft allows for an additional 2 degrees of Camber, so they say. I've got my local parts gal checking up on the parts difference between 64 and 65 model years.

Stan, apparently the Moog shaft number K5250 should work on your 65... maybe you have a good old timer parts man who could verify this for you. I've seen these shafts on ebay if you want to see how the ends of the shaft are definitely offset to get your camber back. I'm kinda alarmed myself at how my tires tip in at the top as well. I had a freind drive it across the parking lot and I was really surprised at how much the tilt when you are turning the wheels.. YIKES!! I can imagine this has got to be tearing up the tires. Cheers, Mike

Years ago I put the offset Moog pieces on my 1970. Yes it allowed for more shims and more flexibilty aligning the front end. I'm happy with them and see no down sides. John

The 205/70R15's could be causing trouble; however, it is good to know that there are positive reviews for this offset control arm shaft. Moog definitely doesn't make cheapy parts.
