Do i have the right bumper on my Cutlass -71?

I have a Cutlass Supreme 1971. I suspect i have wrong front and rear bumper. Or maybe it is mounted wrong? It dosent seems to fit properly. Take a look at the pictures.

Also the hood looks different from the original. Anyone know anything about this hood and where it comes from, and what parts i have to exchange to mount a original hood?

That is wierd. I can see what you mean; unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you. I guess the bumpers are powder coated?

Yes it is. I purchased it last week and the bumpers was already painted black. i dont really know that mutch about the car, and it is my first car. Wonder if i can take the paint away and get the chrome back? Anyway, maybe they just mounted it badly after painting it? Is the bumpers same 1971 and 1972? Maybe it is from a nother yearmodel?

I am by far no Expert, but I can tell you that that is a 1970 Cutlass Supreme hood.
See the chrome "hockey sticks" on the front of the hood? 1971 and 1972 are not straight across the top like yours.
Not sure on the grilles, somone else will surely chime in to help out too.

Hi snylften

Yeah there is something wrong on your car...

If it is a 71!!! You have the right rear bumper (71 - 72 is the same bumper but different taillights)
But the front seems to me like completely 70 (hood, bumper, grilles, headlight bezels are all from a 70!!!)

I know for sure that there are differences in the radiator core support, seems that thats why your front dont looks like what it should

Does your front bumper have round or rectangle blinker lights in it? It looks to me like rectangle which would be correct for the 1970 nose on your car. The bumper could be tweaked, I think but am not sure that the 1970 front bumper brackets are slightly different than the 1971-72. If so that could be a problem but someone who knows more about will need to reply. There is some room for adjustment in the bracket to frame contact with slotted holes, have you tried loosening everything and supporting the bumper where it looks good, then tighten everything down? I have swapped the 1970 and 71-72 rear bumpers and they fit just fine.

No, you don't. The 1970-72 Supreme had a notchback roofline. You have a Cutlass. The VIN will tell you exactly what you have, and if it's really a Supreme VIN, it's been switched.

The VIN will also tell you what model year the car is. The hood, grilles, and front bumper are from a 1970 F-85 or Cutlass four door or wagon. A Supreme would have different grilles and the F-85, as well as all four doors and wagons, used the flat hood. It is a 1970 front bumper as you can see the rectangular parking lamps. The back bumper is a 1971-72 bumper with the 1971 taillight lenses (which are easily swapped). The 1970 bumper is a bolt-on swap for the 71-72 (and vice versa). Since the bumpers have obviously been off the car, post the first seven characters of the VIN and we can tell what you really have.

The 1970-72 Supreme had a notchback roofline. You have a Cutlass.
So what is the "Cutlass S?" As I recall, Oldsguy had a 1971 Cutlass S years ago and it was a fastback like the one Snylften has in the picture...

Either way, it is a cool car. The powder coated / painted bumpers aren't up my alley, but whatever floats your boat. If you want to have them replated you should be able to do it if you find a good chroming shop. The bumpers just have to be stripped of all of the paint first.

VIN = vehicle identification number, which is the number you posted.

As noted, this is a 1971 Cutlass. Someone swapped a 1970 nose onto the car, likely after an accident at some point in the car's past. Look closely at the front frame rails for any damage.

I would consider leaving the 1970 nose on your car and just identify the reason for the bumper not fitting right. I looked at the photos again and my first thought is that the front bumper may be bent, tweaked just enough to not be obvious until you try to line it up on the car. Considering your location and shipping costs for replacement parts you might try straightening the bumper you have first.

To replace the nose on your car would require replacing the hood, core support, grill and headlights, and bumper. You could keep the fenders and put the 1971-72 eyebrow trim on them. The hood and core support would need large crates, and be very expensive to ship overseas. So... unless you really don't like the appearance of the 1970 nose I'd stay with it. If you wanted to install a 1970 rear bumper then a person would have to look at your paperwork to tell it wasn't a 1970. That's my thoughts and what I'd do if I were in your position. John

Hi,

I Highly recommend the following sites :

Opgi.com
Fusick.com
Tamrazsparts.com or @ eb*y look to the shop section and type in tamrazs
ThePartsplaceinc.com

If you need replacement parts, brakes, hoses, gaskets, fluid, (please remember that no hazardous material like paints or so, can be shipped to you!!!)
I prefer Summitracing.com.

But if you need some special parts, let us know....
Im sure these guys here will help you out!!!!

Greets and happy holidays from Germany,
Torsten

With your front, best is to take a picture from your radiator core support to check what you will need to make it to a real 71....

The core supports have slightly differences from 70 to 71/72 ....

Heres a pic from my 70 cutlass

I agree with the others on the years of the parts bolted on the car.......IMO I bet the bumpers were not in good shape hence the paint,You can get a decent rear bumper repoped but the front one is a bit beefer than the rear and is pricey.........Jerr

I think it looks good, just replace or have the front bumper straightened and rechromed and get a '70 rear and you'll be stylin'.

Just call it a '70 at car shows and stuff.

What are there?... like ten or twenty people in Europe that would know the difference by sight if you said it was a '71 anyway??

Call it a '72 and really confuse people.

The clueless spectator folks tell me my all original except paint '68 GTO is a '69 all the time at cruises and shows, and then when I tell them it's a pure '68 they argue with me about it anyway.
It has 1968 license plates on it too.

I'm pretty sure the '70 core support would have to be changed like John said.
The '72 will work on a '71 but I think you can have '72 grille fitment problems on a '71 support because there are no clearance bump-ups on the top for the grilles to wrap around on the ends like they do in '72.

Perhaps you should point out the "8" in the VIN...
