Rear Control Arm Bushings - 65 442
Question on the two rear control arm (Uppers) bushings that are pressed into the rear axle ear bracket. The two I removed, which appeared to be original, had the bushing flange spaced about 1/4 inch from the face of the axle bracket.
Is this the correct position ? One would think the flange should sit flush to the bracket.

One would be wrong.
The bushing wants to be centered in the ear on the housing. If you push it all the way to one side, the loads from the UCAs are asymmetric, causing twist in the bushing and bolt as viewed from the top. Also, the outer sleeve has a step, so you can't push it in any further.
