Control arm removal frustration

Looking for advice, 69 Hurst Olds, replacing bushings & can’t for the life of me get the right upper control arm off the studs because of the heat shield.....

What’s the deal?

It’s the original heat shield so I’m not thrilled about bending the crap out of it to remove it.

Thanks

The studs are actually splined bolts that are pressed into the frame bracket from the outboard side. The CSM shows you how to put a block of wood against the exhaust manifold and use a pry bar to press the bolts out. It's a good idea to thread a nut over the end of the threads first to prevent messing them up in the process.

Omg I hope that works!

thanks Joe!

I’ve never done this in a car with the heat shield in place. All others were restorations with not motor in place.....

Obviously I'd put the block of wood against the manifold itself, not against the heat shroud. Also, it usually helps loosen the splines by hitting the bolts side-to-side with a brass drift first, before trying to push them out. Be sure to loosen the nuts on the UCA shaft that hold the rubber bushings also. This lets the shaft pivot freely, which minimizes side load on the bolts when you try to get them out.

I’ve got all the bolts loose.

I’ll have to go look at it tomorrow. Not sure there is anything to pry on between the end of the stud and the heat shield.

The cross shaft doesn’t fit between otherwise I’d be able to get the whole thing off no problem.

Thread the nuts back on the two studs loosely and tap back and forth to loosen then - kind of like trying to get the oil filler tube out.

Went out to try at lunch, no luck. Not budging.

How hard can I side-hit them to loosen? Really can’t even get a good shot at the nut with the hammer anyway.

It’s not really that rusty at the hex head of the stud either.

Starting to wonder if I need to focus on removing the shield?

You can (and must) hit them pretty hard. These photos are from the CSM.

Well, I’ll go out there later and give it a whack!

Thankfully, I only have to remove one of them.

ho heat shield in their picture. Will have to put wood against shield. Assume if I am able to loosen with the punch it shouldn’t take a ton of force to push out.

Thanks

The other thing to note in that second photo is the wrench over the nut when they are using the pry bar. The text tells you to use that wrench to wiggle the bolt while prying.

That did it! Once I smacked it good a couple of times it pushed right out.

Thanks again!
