Control arm removal frustration
Control arm removal frustration
Looking for advice, 69 Hurst Olds, replacing bushings & can’t for the life of me get the right upper control arm off the studs because of the heat shield.....
What’s the deal?
It’s the original heat shield so I’m not thrilled about bending the crap out of it to remove it.
Thanks

Obviously I'd put the block of wood against the manifold itself, not against the heat shroud. Also, it usually helps loosen the splines by hitting the bolts side-to-side with a brass drift first, before trying to push them out. Be sure to loosen the nuts on the UCA shaft that hold the rubber bushings also. This lets the shaft pivot freely, which minimizes side load on the bolts when you try to get them out.
I’ve got all the bolts loose.
I’ll have to go look at it tomorrow. Not sure there is anything to pry on between the end of the stud and the heat shield.
The cross shaft doesn’t fit between otherwise I’d be able to get the whole thing off no problem.

Went out to try at lunch, no luck. Not budging.
How hard can I side-hit them to loosen? Really can’t even get a good shot at the nut with the hammer anyway.
It’s not really that rusty at the hex head of the stud either.
Starting to wonder if I need to focus on removing the shield?

Well, I’ll go out there later and give it a whack!
Thankfully, I only have to remove one of them.
ho heat shield in their picture. Will have to put wood against shield. Assume if I am able to loosen with the punch it shouldn’t take a ton of force to push out.
Thanks
