'70 442 Rear Coil Springs

Has anyone installed a set of MOOG 5415 rear springs on stock '70 442? Just installed a set on my car ride height is a little higher than expected.
Advise.

Update

Bought the 5415's and installed them... without checking spec's ...darn bay with great price...anyway these are for not my car. So now the question is which ones do I buy... from Inline Tube...or SuperCars or ?
From what I read the Moog 5415's are for station wagon's that explains why the ride height is about 1.75" above the "book" spec's ...great deal impulse buy and now a do over....at least I know how to do it
Please advise of the best.....
Thanks!

Sometimes the springs take a "set" after a while. I used the 5415's on the 72 vert I finished in 2013. Like you I was not happy at all about the rear ride height, but within a couple of months it had settled down about one inch. Let us know the difference in the ILT and Moog freshly installed heights because it is amazing to me his much difference it makes in the look of the car. My 68 Hurst had the Moogs put in it when I redid it the car in '99. It has settled down beautifully since then, but it took 15 years to do so!!

My big block 72 442 and 70 SX both have Cargo Coil CC501s and they sat perfectly right away - just a tad below level in the rear. 10+ years later they still sit the same. Good luck with your new set.

Nope that's with the 45 year old OEM Springs. Running P225/70-14's closest size you can get to stock ...only 3 tires sizes to choose from when running 14" wheels.
I'll see if I have a picture of the 5415's and post.

Well could not find any "after" pictures. The top of the tire in the previous picture attached is about 1" above wheel well. After the 5415's install it's about 3".....could easily put some L-60's in there which fit I had a 1970 Sport Coupe when I was 17 (now 57) did not know how special that car was.....sold it for $800.00 !!!!!!!!!!! after 2 yrs of ownership.
Anyway, when I get the springs from ILT I will update....hopefully that should do it after 2 times of do-over you get way to good at it !

Not to beat it to death but I don't want anyone to have to do a do over....

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mo...ions/year/1970

If you click on this it does show the 5415 correct for 1970 Cutlass, F-85 but this site shows the "Special Note" 6 passenger.....

Now I know why I have the extra 2" lift which women pay for

Can't wait to get the ones from ILT !

X2 on the 501s although I can not give any input as my motor is still not in I, do like a little bit of rake though, never liked the front up look

From an old thread in 2011:

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...l-springs.html

The rear spring set that raise the rear of the car 1.5" and be stiffer and handle well is a MOOG# 5415. This set is about 11% stiffer that the stock HD springs when the car was new.
The engeneering specs are:
  • Wire Diameter .61"
  • Installed Ht. 9.0"
  • Free Ht. 14.62"
  • Load Rate 169# (stk HD for A-body was 140# )
  • Load Capacity 849# each spring.

If you have a SMT (syncromesh tranny), then the 5385 should be it.

I also have replacement cargo coil on mine and it still sits fine after 30+ years. The car sits almost dead level, but has a hint of nose down attitude, which I really like.

I've had a lot of good products from ILT, and they've always shipped promptly and packed well. Good to know others are seeing the same.

The book say's 9 5/8" from 3" in from front of rear wheel well for ride height. Measured 9 3/4" but...1/4 tank of fuel and no spare tire.
Yes I have had very good product's from ILT....

Just read this thread and found it quite informative. I'm wondering however, do I just assume since this car is so old that it needs new springs? How do I tell since I can't get it on the road to test ride quality at this point. Figured I'd ask while I have the shocks out. Also, my local O'Reilly has the Moog CC501 available. Is that what I need for my car?

As long as your ride height is good I would not worry about them now. I would keep everything you can as original as you can for now. Get it running and driving first.

Don't assume anything.

When I took the springs out of my 72 Cutlass S, they still provided the right ride height, and when I measured them against the standard height that was provided, they were spot on. That being the case, I simply cleaned, sanded and painted them before re-installing. This was the case for both front and rear springs. FWIW, I had to replace the original rear springs back in 1982, but since then they've been providing exactly what they're supposed to. You can obviously buy new springs if you want to, but if the old ones are good, you'll just be spending $ unnecessarily. JMO

The shocks on the other hand were complete garbage. If your ride seemed to be a bit on the soft side before you decided to rebuild? I'd have a serious look at the shocks. Sometimes, folks think they need new springs when all they really need is new shocks. Something to consider?

The air shocks that were on there were leaking air when I tried pumping them up. Figured they weren't worth the hassle of replacing with the same, as they weren't original to the car anyway.

I guess I will just keep the springs I have on there for now. Just figured that they would be easy access at this point.

Whar's that durned cat???? I should have known better than to let it get it's fangs and claws into me...

I had a really nice sabbatical and some warm vacation time too. My curling season is almost over; just a few more events that I can't play in, but can watch. Looking forward to Spring and the cruising season. Thanks for asking Eric, hope all is well with you and the family.
