'66 and '67 442 Hoods

Can someone verify whther or not the hoods on a '66 and '67 Olds 442 are interchangeable? Or let me know who to contact to find out?

I'm in the process of restoring my 1966 Olds 442 that my dad gave me, in which he purchased brand new in 1966. The 400 (I'm keeping it even though it is no good anymore) was replaced with a new engine. However, I only have ~ 1" clearnace from the carb to the hood with no air filter. Therefore, I'm going to get a hood made with a 2" cowl ( I would have rather kept the original hood on it...but I'll store it as well) but the only places I could find that could do the work only have '67 templates and above years. Glasstek is one of the manufactures I was looking at doing this for me. Let me know if there is anything closer on the West (Northern California).

Best Regards,
Jesse

Hey Jesse. Is it the intake manifold causing the clearance problems? Or is it the block you used? Seems like a ton of work and money if you can simply change out the manifold. Then again, if you're going for performance, I guess you can't.

I'm fairly certain the hoods are interchangeable, but you should get definite confirmation on this.

Hey Tom -

It's the engine...I put in a brand new 502 and it has an Edelbrock Performance manifold (the lowest profile possible) and still have the issues...we knew this could be a problem prior to having the engine built and sure enough we have the clearance issue. So that is where we are at right now with the restore.

Not interchangable unless you change out the rest of everything between the front fenders. Core support, grill, headlight buckets, bumper ect.

Doh! I knew I was going to get that one wrong. I forgot they actually changed the front. It's similar but definitely different between the two years. My bad.

1966 Hood

I'm up in Medford Oregon and I have a nice 1966 Cutlass hood if you need one to modify. If you change your mind on keeping the 400 I'd be interested in a trade, hood plus cash for your engine. I'm presuming it needs rebuilt and doesn't have a rod through the side of the block!

But back to the engine, do you have room to lower it? If there's clearance between the crossmember and the oil pan could you do something with the motor mounts to get more room up top? John

I run a 455 in my 66 with an older style aluminum intake and able to use stock hood.

I appreciate you getting back to me, John! I might take you up on the offer for buying the hood. And might take you up on the trade.....I'll get back to you with an answer. By the way, what type of shape is the hood in and how much are you asking for it?

Best Regards,
Jesse
