1972 Steering Pump Rebuild Question

1972 Steering Pump Rebuild Question
I'm just about done with the rebuild but had a few simple questions.
1.) Does the orientation of the thrust plate, pump ring, and pressure plate WRT the two dowels matter? What I mean is that each of the three parts is not symmetrical so can they be put on incorrectly by 180*? For example, the thrust plate has a tiny oil passage on one side. Which dowel should this be next to? The pump ring has what I think is a cast-in oil channel running up the outside of the cast. Which dowel should this be next to?
2.) My pump pulley is the kind that is held on by a nut. How am I supposed to get it back on? I don't own air tools and had to take my pump shaft to a shop to break the nut off. Can they use an air wrench to put it back on? It's supposed to be torqued to 60 lbs (I think) how do I check this with it spinning on me?
Thanks for any help! mark

If your PS pump pulley has the holes in it, here is how to tighten the nut after the pump is remounted:

I had my pump rebuilt so cannot shed light on that part but hopefully someone else will know.

Thanks for the reply, Rob. My pulley is solid so no holes to help with putting the bolt back on. BTW I noticed in your build (which i had been following - awesome) that your steering pump pulley bolt looks really nice. Was it sand blasted clean or new? I'd like to get a new one if possible. 对了,'你会讲中文吗?

Thanks...
My pump was rebuilt by Chip at Power Steering services. He did sandblast the parts prior to painting them the correct colors.
Not sure if this will hlp, but it could be possible to hold the pulley with a rubber strap wrench (kinda like an oil filter wrench). Not sure if that will get enough torque on it even if you find a strap big enough.

Yeah, i tried exactly what you suggest with an old pump belt and 2 foot pry bar to get the nut off, and ended up snapping the belt. Took it to a local garage and he had it off in 2 seconds with an air wrench...urgh! Right tools for the right job I guess.

1) make sure the arrow on the pump ring is facing out
2) you can use a chain vise grip
Make sure that the vanes on the rotor have the rounded ends outward, also make sure the outside 'O' ring on the reservoir is seated properly when tightening (I mucked this one up).

Thanks boondocker. I got the part about having the arrow on the pump ring facing out what I'm unsure about is the way you put the ring on the dowels. There are two dowels and two holes in the ring so I could put it in one way or I could turn it 180* and put it in the other way, both ways with the arrow facing out. Does it matter which way? Same wit the thrust and pressure plates.
