71 Cutlass Supreme Barn Find
For Sale: 1971 Cutlass Supreme. In the process of getting it home now. Car starts and moves forwards and backwards, but no brakes. Trunk pan has rust, but I cannot tell how bad yet, as it has a piece of sheet metal laying across it. Floors and Frame seem to be solid. Extra fenders, driverside door, bumpers and misc. parts. Drivetrain I was told is original with rebuilt heads due to timing chain break before it was parked. It has a 350 Rocket 2V with 350 Trans. The carb needs accelerator pump or complete rebuild. Front seats were recovered with new foam on driver's side. New rear cover uninstalled and passenger's seat foam. Dual exhaust, rally wheels. Needs lower quarters and fender work. Will update thread over the weekend when I get it home. Asking $3000 as is. Weather permitting, I will start cleaning the car and fixing little things to make it road worthy (Brakes & Carb), which will cause the price to go up some. Car is located in NKY near Cincinnati, Ohio. Thanks,

71 Cutlass Supreme should have a stock 350 4 bbl unless something was changed on the original order. Bumper guards are definitely positioned in accordance with early 1971 positioning. Column shift with buckets is not the norm, but definitely an original option.

The front buckets were recovered with PUI covers and are more on the brownish side. I received the uninstalled rear covers with the car. At the time the previous owner recovered the buckets, the rears didn't need covered, but they do now. They are hard and brittle. Here are pics of the interior after I cleaned the car a little today.

I ran the vin through the decoder today hoping it would tell me if the car was ordered with the 2 barrel carb, but it just stated SC V8. I guess I'll have to decode the protecto plate.
Thanks for the information you provided.

Here are pictures of the CS after a cleaning this morning. Some close shots of the quarter rust and rust around the rear window. I see some little bubbles under the vinyl, but not rear bad. Don't think the roof would need replaced. Floors and frame are very nice. Cannot tell how bad the trunk is yet due to the sheet metal. I have 2 extra fenders, Left door and front bumper. Car is complete. Thanks,

If you want to find out if the engine is original, check out the stamping pad to verify the numbers there. Use your cell phone and flash to take a picture -that's much easier than unbolting stuff or trying to read it with a mirror extension. I haven't heard of anyone wanting to replace their 4bbl with a 2bbl on these cars. Like I said earlier the 4bbl was standard. If it was ordered with a 2bbl that would be something like a 60.00 credit to the buyer.

Thanks Allan. I didn't know if Oldsmobile was like Chevrolet and you could determine a 2 barrel engine vs. 4 barrel by decoding the vin. If I get around to checking the numbers before I sell it, I'll post the information. I think the weather is predicted to get bad here this week, so I won't be messing with the car.

Your VIN will start 342571()dddddd where the() will be a letter indicating the build factory, and each d will indicate the production line sequence at that plant.
It wasn't until 1972 that Olds introduced the engine code into the VIN. They did build a 350 2bbl dual exhaust motor that was a J code for that year. Olds never had a proper dual exhaust system for the 350, all they did was use a block off plate on the passenger side manifold and eliminate the crossover pipe. Thornton makes a true dual for the Olds 350 but it's received mixed reviews.

That's the beginning of my vin. The car came from the Lansing facility.
As for the exhaust, I remember the block off plate that was on my 1970 Cutlass with duals. You are a wealth of knowledge. Thanks Again.

Honestly, I'd have a hard time selling this car at $2000.00
I've probably bought seven cars (all 70 thru 72 Cutlass models) over the last year and I wound up parting almost all of them out. I've found that most everyone is looking for something rare or something they can flip real fast for big profits. I have only sold one car through this forum and it was a 1971 442 Convertible (rare). I couldn't get anyone to even talk to me about the rusty cars. Nothing but crickets.
I believe you'll make more money parting it out. But that is totally depending on the condition of the parts on the car. I have foubd that where there is rust, there is bound to be more rust. And it'll take a few months to part it out. The bucket seats will sell quickly but then everyting else will move ever more slowly over time. In the end you'll be giving away stuff and hauling stuff to the local scrap yard. I go through the same cycle with every Cutlass I buy.
But I do like your car. I hope you got a steal of a deal and I hope you do well with it. We need to save every 1968-72 Cutlass / 442 that we can. And when they can't be saved we need to pull as many parts off of them as we can so other cars can be saved.
Good luck

Thanks for your post Olds442redberet. I'm not going to part it, because I don't have a place for it to sit in pieces. I'll either give someone a really good deal or fix the brakes and use it as a beater and drive it to and from work. I think is still has plenty of life in it. All of the brake lines and two wheel cylinders came with the car. I also have two right fenders. One is nice and other needs the lower section repaired, complete driver's door with glass, front bumper core and box of bumper and fender brackets.
If I get another good weekend, I'll have it on the road.
Thanks Again,
