1970 Cutlass (w-31) 350 motor w/TH400 and 12 bolt rearends. The motor runs great, has exhaust manifolds, Edelbrock carb and HEI ignition. Trans is a rebuilt TH400 and new converter along with a brand new driveshaft. Rear end is a Chevy 12 bolt with 3.55 gears and posi. Everything in the rearend is new which includes axles, bearings, carrier, and gears. Rearend housing has been powdercoated chassis black. Boxed control arms. Tires are newer with tons of tread and the manual brakes are new all the way around. New 2 ½” Flowmaster exhaust with crossover tube and exiting in the cutouts in the bumper which sounds great. Interior is new as well which has a black bench seat and black carpet. Everything in the interior is decent. No real flaws except the headliner is a little discolored. The hood is and original OAI hood which has no cracks or splits. Paint is in pretty good shape but is by no means perfect. I did put a new aftermarket wing on it. The non w31 rear bumper is new and in great shape. Over all this car is an awesome driver and I wouldn’t be afraid to drive it anywhere. This was probably a W-31 but it does not have the original drivetrain in it and I looked everywhere for some documentation but was unsuccessful.So don't take this as I am selling a W31. I am selling a decent Cutlass that will run and drive anywhere. I am asking $12,000 I am open to offers. Car is in Grand Rapids,Michigan. PM me if interested then we can talk.

Not sure what you mean by that, but note that W-31s did not use the cutout bumper. In fact, the only small block car to ever get a cutout bumper from the factory was the Rallye 350.

 

What I meant about non W31 bumper is that it is not a W31 bumper. It has the cutouts in it. The guy I bought the car from put that bumper on.

In 1972 if you optioned your Cutlass with the W-29 442 package it came standard with the 350 engine & a non cut out bumper was standard.

However, if the dual exhaust option was added then the cut out bumper also came into play. The factory did build sbo powered cars with the cut out bumper in 1972....you just had to option it correctly to get it.

I used to own one such car. It is currently undergoing a total resoration in Calgary. I had the GM of Canada docs that shows it was built that way but they went with the car to the new owner. It is white with black stripes & interior. Has W-29, OAI, disc brakes, buckets, console, dual gate, gauges & 3.08 posi, dual exhaust with bumper. It will be a nice car when it is finished.

 

I'd love to see that documentation. Every factory document I have shows that 1972 N10 cars did NOT get the cutout bumper. I used to own one and I removed the straight bumper to install a cutout one.

 

Can we get back to selling my car? Does anyone want to buy it?

I can't even imagine what part of Canadian docs would address that even. The Canadian data that the document letters come from only tell what options come on the car. W29 was an option, N10 was an option. The N10 option did not specify trumpets and cutouts if ordered with W29. If the Canadian docs specified the cutouts in the description of the N10, then the description was just plain wrong. The description of the options was written by the guy that puts them into the letters. On *some* occasions, that description has been wrong.
the Assembly Manual shows no trumpet (therefore no cutouts) for the 350.

Well, in defense of this guy, he does say that let's assume its a cutlass....so, being the drive train isn't original, who knows, maybe at some time someone "thought" they were creating a "clone or tribute", although incorrectly, therefore, adding the cut out bumper.

And yes, I also agree with Kurt, every time someone posts a comment, it brings the thread to the top....so......Scotto31....be patient, and understand that we have probably the most knowledgeable Olds people here on this site. It's a very nice car with a reasonable price. There seems to have been a bunch of people looking for a car like yours recently. Be patient.

 

Although often wrong here is a cut & paste from 442 dot com regarding the rear bumper in 1972. As always with info on that site take it with a grain of salt.

With the 455, you got the cutout bumper and dual exhausts and chrome tips. The cutout bumper could be added to the 350 CID 442.

I do not have access to the docs as I am not in contact with the person who bought it. I have owned far too many cars & it is hard to remember all the specifics on every one but I do recall specifically that it was an M code car in the VIN (350 with duals). If I am wrong about the bumper I appologize in advance. As always I was trying to contribute in a positive way although it doesn't always work out that way.

That said I have seen other references to 350 powered cars with the presence of the bumper being a factory piece. I agree 100% that standard issue was the non trumpeted bumper on the base 350 cars with the 180 hp engine but with the 200 hp dual exhaust version a buyer could choose to pay extra for the notched bumper.

Also is it possible that dealers ordered the bumpers & tips & added them to accommodate buyers?....ofcourse it is. The bumper is one of the coolest features of the 68-72 cars & it is ridiculous that it was not part of the base 1972 version.

Perhaps Joe is right & only Rallye 350 cars were factory recipients of the bumper & all others were dealer only or day two additions. For sure we know the 1970 W-31 did not have it as the seller stated.

You guys are right. You can talk about anything you want in this thread. My original point on the bumper was I know it is not the correct bumper for a W31 but the guy liked the cutout bumper so that is what he bought. The car is not original anymore anyway so I probably would have done the same. The reason I am selling this car is that I am buying back a car I sold in 2003. A 1970 442 W30. He called me up last week and asked if I wanted to buy it and of course I said yes. But I would relly like to sell this car because this would make 4 Oldsmobile's. A 1969 442, 1970 W30, 1970 "W31" and a 1972 Cutlass.
