Is that the original '68 400 engine? The complete air cleaner should have been Red unless it is a 2-barrel carburetor. The thermostat housing bypass is a later style, too. Not nit-picking at all. Just curious.

And an A/C engine in a non-A/C car (assuming the oil filler hasn't been changed)

Maybe someone just liked the curved oil fill tube. If you have the Protect-O-Plate you could check the engine unit number on it against the number on the oil fill tube. It would be an interesting mystery if they matched

Honestly. I was always under the impression all 1968 Olds engines in a F-85/Cutlass/442 had the curved oil fill tube and not just the A/C cars. The bottom line is, the engine numbers match and it is a really nice car. Most all of the people who like this body style will not be turned off by incorrect air cleaner colors, etc. It's a cool car.

This is some great stuff, drawings and all. Except, debating on the oil fill tube originality. Since the numbers on the engine pad below the head on the Driver's side match the VIN, there is no reason to be concerned about the oil fill tube or the T-stat housing for that matter. The car is about 54 years old and those items are easily changed in five decades.

UPDATE: Between allyolds68 and myself I believe we have solved the curved tube mystery..for some reason the site says one photo I want to upload is to big so I will try to upload later..the answer we believe is this car was originally a turnpike cruiser. I found three old pictures of 68 442 turnpike cruiser engine bays with no AC, all three no AC, and all three have a curved oil fill tube. That makes perfect sense as to why the vin matches the block and why the air breather is wrong and the intake and thermo housing are later model.. by crikey I think we have it Watson..

How did I know you finally got the picture to upload? I was only commenting on your comment saying it was too big to upload. Make up your mind.

I am sure I mentioned it having a 2-barrel carburetor. I even stated at home it may be a Turnpike Cruiser because of the black air cleaner. Should have a lightweight rear gear as well. That's pretty cool.
Good job figuring it out, Andy and Ally Olds68.

Thank you.. Once you put a four barrel on ,its still a 442 with highway cruisers. It’s such a nice car for somebody’s not want to spend 40 to 50 grand it’s a great car. I am not worried about selling it only takes one person with the checkbook, and if nobody shows up I’ll just keep it

you did me mention it may have @ two bbl, however it has a 4 bbl, so it threw us all..i knew the air cleaner was a whoopsy deal for sure..hey it took us all to brainstorm now we know curved oil tubes are NOT just AC cars.. interesting the assembly manual said nothing of this little anomaly

I just got back, have secured a proper 68 air cleaner, in the middle of stripping it and painting it as it had some surface rust.. my brother cleaned up the trunk and spot painted that area and cleaned up the engine bay. It turned out nice, not going to half *** repaint it as people need to know the car is not a polished up engine bay trying to sell. Its a very solid very nice basically original 442, not 100% as there are a few minor changes in 54 years..We are waiting on a antenna bezel nut, the air cleaner tin top decal and a couple small things.hopefully they are in stock and get shipped asap. Then I will redo the ads and post. Was trying to find the correct interior blue to repaint the arm rest bases but no luck on that so far.

This is a cool car, but to add to the unexplained phenomena, all 1968 442 Sport Coupes came standard with the RPO B90 chrome trim around the side windows. Likely it was removed at some prior repaint (or possibly painted over), but it's another question.
#35
Thank you Joe, the trim is on the car it was painted over. I thought about trying to remove the paint but I was afraid I might mess up the trim underneath. So I’ll leave that job to whoever the new owner may be. It’s a very straight, rest free example of a 442 for sure

Its about to go back up for sale, we got a correct air cleaner, replaced the torn arm rest pads, cleaned up trunk, cleaned up engine bay etc. verified again all numbers match. Verified rust free one more time. I will be posting current pics in the next few days..
As stated asking 30k but will take solid reasonable offers..very solid, nice running very original car.
