Hey guys, it’s rare we see any photos of how the underside of the cars looked out of the factory. In particular I’m interested in 1968 442s - mine from Lansing. I’m replacing my fuel tank. What color was that? And interested in what paint or any other coating might have been applied in other underside areas. Thanks. —Billy

 

I did a 68' 442 that came out of an AZ junk yard and built in California. The bottom of that car was black without any undercoating.

 

My '68 4-4-2 is a LAN build. The bottom, frame, and wheel wells (but not the M-20) were completely spooged with undercoating. VERY distasteful, IMHO. It is black under the spooge. The tank was spooged, also. My replacement tank is plain stainless steel, or whatever they are from the factory. I have no idea where it was first sold. When I bought it 4th hand just over 10 years ago it had been through at least one mediocre resto (by the 3rd owner/flipper). For those interested in removing the spooge: The bulk of it scrapes off fairly easily if you heat it first with a propane torch. This leaves a thin film behind, but gets most of it.

 

Oven cleaner also does a good job of softening the undercoating to be scraped off

My arlington 72 is red oxide primer on the bottom, when i replaced the floors i painted them the same!

 

I don't remember the underside of my 68 but the rear wheel wells were scarlet under the undercoating
