1968 cutlass
1968 cutlass
I'm in the process of having my paint and bodywork done on my cutlass. The factory color was Silver green. I was wondering if these cars keep their value more with the factory color or will it keep it's value with a none factory color? I have thought about two tone with a blue and silver or possibly black. My idea was to paint below the molding the blue and the hood and roof and deck lid the silver or black. Would it be better to stay with the factory colors they offered in 1968 or would it matter if I went to a more modern color such as world rally blue. If anyone can give me any advice that would be greatly appricated. Thanks

Your last line tells you exactly what you are going to get - advice! No one is better to determine the color you want your car to be than yourself. Having said that, as a purist, I believe that you get the best return for your buck by going with the original color. But that's only what I believe; there's lots of other opinions out there as well!
IMHO, if everything else on the car is original and you plan on keeping it that way, than I would stick with the original paint scheme. This should help maintain its "value" if an Olds purist is looking to buy your car.
Otherwise, to each their own, and it is your car so painting it the color that makes you happy won't be a bad decision either.

I agree paint it the color you want, but most likely it will be of most value if kept original. I have read "expert" opinions state that if you do change the color paint it another color that was offered that year - that opens up plenty of choices as well. heck there is a 1970W30 painted Plumb Crazy Purple - from the factory, back then if you tried hard enough you could order any color you wanted - even today you can order a Porsche any color you want - for a price
I would suggest to Google images of your year Cutlass and look at other cars in the various color combinations. Do you like the look of any colors offered that year or do you want originality? Will it make a difference in resale value? That is up to interpretation. If the paint job is good quality and is a color that appeals to most people, I would say paint it a color you really like. Once you see other cars with custom paint jobs you might sway that direction. Especially if it is just a Cutlass. If it were a 442, SX, Hurst, Rallye 350 or W car, I would leave it a stock color. IMO.
Do you think this car is worth more or less because of the way it is painted? I personally find the originality of this car very appealing.

Thats a sweet looking car. I know what you mean about the stock look of the car. It's just difficult because some might like the color and others might not. I think it's an okay color it's a dirty silver with a slight green tint. I have thought of the factory blue and silver but they don't make the z code paint any longer.
Well I have thought about my color for a while now. I have come to the point that I'm wanting to do a World Rally blue pearl with a graphite gray pearl. Just not sure if I should do the blue on top or the bottom.
