Removing brake drum on a 55 Super 88?

I want to do a brake inspection on my 55 Super 88 but last time I tried I could not remove the front brake drums, and just gave up. Do you have to remove the large center castle nut to get it off? Looks like you shouldnt have to....looks like
it should slide off the studs and center hub, but its not budging. I retracted the brake shoes and it spins freely. What am I doin wrong?

Yes you need to remove the castle nut and front wheel bearings. The drum and hub are swedged together as an assy.
