My '69 Toronado is equipped with front drum brakes. I wanted to pull a drum off to check my linings today but had difficulty trying to remove the drum. My question.....does the large 1 1/2 inch spindle nut need to be removed (it's on extremely tight). I couldn't tell if the center hole of the drum was outside or behind that nut.

After reading some past forum posts regarding brake drums, it looks like I'm trying to determine if my drum and Hub are one piece or if their is a separation there that I just cannot see?

Any help will be appreciated....thanks.

Hub and drum are separate. You do not need to pull the spindle nut. The Toro uses the same brake drums front and rear.

You HAVE backed off adjustment on the brake shoes, right?

Spray a little PB Blaster around where the drum meets the spindle and tap around there to break the bond. Rent a brake drum puller if needed. Worst to worst, a little heat will break them loose.

They will come off, but sometimes can be a pain. See if you can heat up the drum a bit. If it expands, could come off easier.

Tap it a couple of times on the side with a hammer while pulling back. You may have to loosen the adjuster barrel for the drum to slide easier.

you may have to loosen the adjuster A LOT. Like all the way.

The center nut is holding the axle in place. The drum will come off with persuasion. The hub & axle stay in place. Try to save your drum. The ones that Napa sells are too small, but with the correct part number.
Also, there should be a cotter pin in your axle nut.
