Hot steering fluid

Hello!

I filled in the steering fluid (Castrol Transmax Dex III) 1 inch under the cap.
Then I drove 30 miles.
After it the steering fluid was hot (about 140 F°) and there was steering fluid on the cap (and it spilled out during driving).

Why? and what should I do?

Thank you very much

Did you fill to the line on the dipstick on the cap? If you put in too much, the fluid got hot, expanded, and spilled over.

There is no dipstick on my cap! From the edge of the steering fluid tank 1 inch (cold fluid) down.

Is that too much? What about the temperature?

140F is not hot, and you possibly just over filled it. Just keep an eye on it for a while and see if it's ok.

I did the same thing with my '67. What a mess. I find that if I keep the fluid level a little lower than the fill line, when hot, the fluid just touches the line and no mess.
