brake backing plates - help!

hello all,

restoring a 72 cutlass 2 door and it has 4 drum brakes - would like to keep original if possible but can't seem to find brake backing plates.

The ones I have on the car (original) have some small holes in them near the top. I was thinking about cleaning them as best I can (wire wheel etc.) and then patching the holes with fiberglass or welding.

Any thoughts on this? or has anyone done something similar?

is it a big problem to leave them untouched until I find some used ones somewhere?

Backing plates from any 1964-1972 GM A-body cars with drum brakes will interchange. They should be plentiful, particularly with most folks converting to disk brakes.

Are you needing these for the front or rear of your car? I may have something, where are you located? John

brake backing plates

I am in Halifax NS, Canada - I have called around and most can't find parts and are suggesting I move to disc brakes. Is it a huge job to do? never worked on disc brakes.

would be interested in understanding process if someone has done before.
