1968 vinyl top question

I bought my 68 in pieces. It used to have a vinyl top, and I'm a little confused as to how that works on a 68. If I set the glass in it, the trunk comes up to the glass, but all the pics I can find online show a little strip of vinyl between the glass and the trunk. Here's a pic of the trim brackets on the car for reference.

If i if I can get the roof smooth enough from rust damage, I'll probably paint it, but if not I'll put a top back on it. Is that a decision I need to make before paint?

any help would be appreciated! It's my first 442, so go easy. :-D

What I'm used to seeing is a metal strip that attaches to the top of the trunk lid. Its textured like vinyl and painted to match the top. I'll look to see if I can come up with a picture of it. John
