Wheel opening patch

Wheel opening patch
1970 442. I have some metal repair to do around the RR wheel opening and have heard the LF fender opening is pretty close if one were to splice pieces from a fender to the quarter. I don't think it needs a full quarter and would rather keep as much original metal as possible. I have access to a fender to sacrifice that is pretty rusty around bottom but wheel opening is good. Have any of you guys heard this before or maybe have experience with such a repair?

A guy I know who used to do body repairs on the 70's Cutlass/442's in the day told me you can use a L/F fender opening to repair a R/R quarter and vice versa. When the cars were 10 years old or so here in salty roads Michigan the rear quarters would get rusty and repops weren't available. I can't say if this works for sure as I've not done it myself. I planned to try it on my 70 Vista but now looks like I'm going to sell it. If you try it let us know if it works!

I sold a couple fenders to a guy with a '71 442. In days past he had been a bodyman at a local Olds dealership and he said he wanted the fenders to replace the rear outers. Right front patches the left rear and vice versa.
Just called him to confirm that, and he's done it two or three times but suggested marking a cardboard template to ensure the openings are the same. Obviously the further you get from the wheel opening the less matchup you'll get.
I need to repair that area on both sides of my '71 and likewise would like to keep as much original metal as possible, so I'll be interested in hearing how you make out.
