Folks, I've looked at the body manual and it doesn't say much. (Shocker.)
Does anyone have any experience on whether the inner fenders cam be removed without removing the fenders? There's so much undercoat under there, I can't say for sure before I'd get started.

Mine came right out from under the hood ( 68 Cutlass) not sure about the64.......the motor was out of the car too.

 

Kind of a big difference between an A-body with flexible plastic inner fenders (and no motor) and an early B-body with metal inners...

 

Go ahead John take off the fenders. And the doors while you're at it.

 

Exactly why I stated "not sure about the 64", glad you saw fit to correct such a major error on my part. I am also quite sure the OP found it helpful too.

I, scratch that, WE, all bow at your feet.

 

The inner fenders will come out without removing the fender, I have done this on my 63 98 and my 62 starfire. The wheel has to be off and you have the bolts around the wheel well and the bolts to the frame. The drivers side has the vacuum canister for your power brakes that should be loosened off to allow it to move. The lip around the wheel well is a real pain to pry out but it can be done.

Thanks, all! I figured it wouldn't be a cake walk in either case. No way I'm taking off the (outer) fenders.... so I need to make a decision.
I'd like to put the undercoating guy on a rack... I'm scared that any chemical I use to soften it will play havoc on the wiring and the rubber items under there.

Do what Oldskeeper said as he has the experience at taking many apart and putting them back together.

 

If your are trying to remove the undercoating from the wheel wheels? Leave them on the car a go get a cheap "needle scalier". Make sure its cool outside and it will chip away the undercoat and rust. The undercoat gets soft in the heat and the needle scalier is not as effective. One last thing you need an air compressor.
