rear of hood height too high

Hi Guys,
THe rear of my hood when closed on my 70 cutlass sits at least 1/2 '" higher on one side than the fender. I can push it down easy enough but it will of course come up after vibration from driving. I've read about notching the hinge bolts to the inner fender holes and or new hinges or springs. Hoping to repair properly with what I've got. Any assistance will be helpful.
Thanks,

70 ctls

Did you replace the rubber seal on the cowl that seals against the hood?

Don't worry it's an old super stock trick for more air flow from the cowl area, but I guess that doesn't work for street car looks.

I'm thinking the hinge is worn out...

Have you tried adjusting the hinge position on the fender?

Try loosening the hinges where they attach to the fender, have a buddy push up the hood, and while he's pushing tighten the bolts. I saw this in a Olds body manual. Worked on my car..

I've tried loosening just the raised side hinge to fender bolts. Never thought of loosening both sides at the same time and start from scratch. As soon as I get another pair of hands near by I'll give it a try. THanks for the suggestion

Adding a shim between the hinge and the hood will lower it too.

TK-65 Heard about that. You've got to explain that one to me. By raising it higher it lowers it when closed !! What don't I get ?

First off your problem may be with the opposite side hinge being adjusted too low. What happens is it does not seat on the cowl gasket flat and raises on the opposite side. So make sure everything is comming down even and straight.

If raising the opposite side does not get you enough, the shim usually needs to placed on the forward bolt between the hinge and the hood.

Also adjusting the hinge down at the fenders sometimes does the opposite of what you'd expect.

Been there done that.

Mine does same thing. Once you figure it out come to Parlin and do mine!! Actually its at the body shop now and I asked them to try and align it while they were doing other stuff. I tried some washers at the back bolts inbetween bolt and hinge. Only raised it higher. Yes I tried all types of adjustments to the hinges. Lets see what happens!

I improved the condition tremendously by doing the folowing: As was suggested by
dc2x4drvr and oldcutlass I loosened the fender bolts on both sides. I lifted the hood as high and as even as possible and propped it open with a 2x4. I then tightened down all the bolts. The hood on the problem side is not perfect but is acceptable whereas before it was up more than 1/2 inch. Thanks to all for their suggestions. Tried the shim in the front hinge to hood bolt as well. Did not seem to make a difference
