Rear bumper removal

On a 66 442, how do I remove the rear bumper to remove the taillights? Do I have to remove it completely or can it somehow be slid back to allow for removal of the taillights?

The rear bumper is held on by 4 carriage bolts. You may be able to remove 2 and loosen 2,, to gain access. I would just take it off, it's pretty easy!

Would I need the assistance of someone? I can't afford to scratch the paint. Is there some other way to support the bumper?

Leave the bumper on the car. Loosen the 4 bolts holding the bumper brackets to the frame, should drop enough to slip tail lights out.

If not then remove one bolt per side(the bolt thats closes to end of the frame) and the bumper will pivot down. Might want to disconnect the plate light wire. Henry

If you're going to loosen the bumper bolts I'd have a jack under it just to make sure it doesn't come crashing down. I took my bumper off by myself but I had used a tire and jack also it wasn't redone yet. It's always good to have a extra set of hands when working on larger items.

As per the others with one more tip: Put several wide layers of masking tape around the painted surfaces of the rear bumper in case it tips or moves a bit. The multi layer taped areas will help cushion against sharp edges and scratching the paint. When you're done, peel the tape and your good to go.
