1970 Cutlass front bumper removal ??

I need to remove my front bumper without knicking it all up.
Somehow it was bent and I need to remove it and have the brackets bent back properly.
Just curious what the simplest method is.

I see it has the bolt caps on it, so I'm assuming I have to remove those.
I was just wondering if anyone had any images for reference that showed
where all the bolts are exactly ?? Can't go look right now , it's stored for the winter.

I also have to replace my front grilles, if anyone has a simple method for that as well.
I'm sure I can spend time under the hood figuring it all out, but any tips would be appreciated.

Tape everywhere and a helper is nice but I never have one around so i do it by myself with a floor jack. To me its easier to do it brackets and all.

The grilles are the easy part. They are held in with 2 or 3 bolts each. 1 is common in the center under the tooth.

As far as the bumper goes....I never got mine off when I had the car painted because it looked to be more of a task then I was ready for at the time due to time constraints.

Remove the bolt caps?
If you're talking about the stainless head caps on the bumper bolts you don't take those off.
The are two nuts and bolts holding the bumper brackets on each frame rail that you remove and the whole bumper will come off.
The bumpers don't weigh much, I set them on a couple of heavy cardboard boxes I keep around to slide them in and out from under the car to remove or install. The boxes are a little low so you can put more cardboard on top to shim the bumper up to the correct position before tightening.

Well you just answered my next question.....how much they weigh.

Thanks for the input guys. I was just curious if they weighed a ton and were easy to get off.
Mine were removed and rechromed 5-7 years ago, so I'm assuming they won't be too much of a b*tch to remove this time. I hope.....

Back bumper without lights weighs 35 lbs - front can't be much more.

I pulled mines last October. I unbolted the brackets from the frame. it's only 4 nuts and bolts, 2 on each side, just like the previous posters said. I can drop mines in less than 5 minutes now.

When I've done mine, I've just laid under the car with my legs sticking out the front, loosened the four bracket bolts, pulled the two front ones, and let the bumper rest on my legs while I pulled the rears.

What looks like bolt "caps" are just the chromed or stainless visible part of the carriage bolts that hold the bumper to the brackets. They have a square shank that fits thru a corresponding square hole in the bumper- it's so the bolts won't spin while you're trying to get everything lined up and tight.

Aces, is it possible that your bumper just needs to be aligned properly instead of completely removed? looks like the center is up too high. Are the side gaps at the fenders even, or wider at the bottom than the top? If that's the case a simple adjustment should be all you need. Now, if the bumper itself is twisted (not uncommon) you may need more.

The brackets have slots in them at the frame end for adjustment, and the nuts have splines on them to keep them from shifting once the alignment is right.

Grab a buddy to help you hold it in position and align away!

That's EXACTLY what it needs.
But I wasn't aware there was room for maneuvering it. I'm sure I'd see that once under the car.

I'm going to refer back to this thread in the Spring and attempt to adjust it.
It was hit on the drivers side lightly and shoved the bumper over to the pass side probably 1.5" too much.

I just figured the brackets were bent. But I'll see if I can adjust.

The brackets may be bent, but that can be fixed with a suitable "adjustment tool" (a 10# sledgehammer).

The holes for the brackets to the frame are slotted 2 ways for adjustment.

Here is a photo of the back side.

As everyone else stated remove the frame to bumper brakets bolts first and pull the bumper forward slightly and drop down, but only after disconnecting the parking lamps at their connector.
