Quarter removal
Quarter removal
Ok guys, I need some help. I need to replace the right quarter on my 69 Cutlass. I have a donor car for complete quarters. My problem is the removal of the old panel. I can see all of the spot welds everywhere on the quarter, but I am stumped as to how the quarter and the rocker come together. I did a search on here and still couldn't find anything explaining or showing how that area is joined. So, how are and where are the quarter and the rocker welded together? Are the quarter and rocker attached to each other at all? Thanks for the help.

What he means is you can't see the QP-to-Rocker spotwelds from outside the car. You have to remove the door/rearseat panel and look inside there. And, there may be a layer of factory chaulk over the spot welded tab on the QP that is sitting ON TOP of the rocker.
So...it's a folded over, inward facing tab at the bottom of the QP (forward of the rear wheel opening). This tab sits on top of the top of the rocker.
One way to remove them is to just slice your QP horizontally 1/2" or so above this seam. Then, once you have the rest of the QP drilled out and removed you will have easier access to these "hidden" spot welds.
Make sure whatever you are using to replace it HAS THIS TAB ON IT!!! If not, then you will need to leave the tab portion in place and weld the new QP onto the old tab.

I like the idea of cutting the old panel to gain access to the welds. I think that will work well on removing the damaged quarter, but I will have to find and gently drill them out on the quarter I am getting from my donor car. Just knowing where they are is a big help. Thanks again.

Gonna drag up a very old thread here, but at least it is still me.
Yes, after all this time I am just now being able to get back to this. Time sure flies and life gets in the way.
So back to removing this quarter. I have found and cut all of the welds on the quarter panel including at the rocker, but the quarter is still very well attached at the rocker. Is this seam brazed or filled with seam sealant? The quarter is loose everywhere except at the rocker. What am I missing?
Thanks guys.

There are some really great videos on youtube about this. I really like the youtuber "Classic Rewind". He is restoring a '68 Gto and is replacing quarter panels, floor pans, cowl etc. He is clear and the video work is very good. I'm in the same boat as you, quarter panels rotted and time flying by! Good luck!!
