Mid-60’s Big Olds Fenders: J nuts or U nuts ?
Gang,
I’m chasing down some squeaks and groans in my front end (pretty much a permanent project). I’m wondering if I used the correct fasteners last time I put it all back together.
In my 66’s, there are quite a few 5/16”s -18 bolts securing the underside lip of the fender to the inner fender just above the wheels. I have J nuts in there now, with the “hook” of the J between the inner and outer fender. I’m not sure these nuts or installation is right.
If J nuts are what Olds used, should the “hook” of the J sit outside the lip of the outer fender and not between? It seems like putting the nut “hook” between the fenders allows for more movement than if you put the J hook outside and secured both fenders against each other.
Or did Olds use the longer U nuts and mine have just gotten replaced over the years?
I’m no body and fender guy, so please let me know what’s right here.
Thanks in advance
Chris

I looked at the same diagram yesterday. Many thanks for posting. My view is that Olds used J nuts, not U nuts, though either would work.
I also checked with my mechanic today, having the "hook" of the J between the fenders is not right.
The fenders should be fastened against each other with the J nut on the outside of both fenders, not in between.
Next few days somewhere I have some light body wrenching to do to fix this.
