Grille/tail light gray

I've used Krylon dull aluminum #1403 to refinish my taillights on my 72 and now I'm ready to refinish my grilles however I'm finding that the 1403 is pretty much obsolete and unavailable. I'm curious if anyone can offer any replacement options that they have used and were happy with the outcomes. Mike

This goes way back and I doubt it’s even still available but in the mid 80’s the guy that built my motor and had three or four 442’s plus a 68 Hurst in about a five year period told me that the Ford “Argent” colored spray paint was the closest thing he had found to matching my 72’s tail lamp lenses. I bought some at the Ford dealership and they turned out well. I did not, however, compare them to another 442 with known original paint on the lenses. He said mine turned out well. Probably not available from Ford but I did find this wheel paint online - maybe they make some for other applications of the wheel paint won’t work? It looks slightly darker than I remember just looking at the wheel on the label. Good luck!

I also did a quick search and found this on O’Reilly.com. Looks to be in stock. It says “chrome aluminum” but it’s 1403 and the cap seems to look right.

I actually called Oreilly on this one and it's a special order with no guarantee they can get it. They suggested going to Home Depot, which I tried a few stores and with no luck, not a one of them had it.

It looks like Autozone stocks this one (but a lot cheaper lol) I'll stop and match up the caps and give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion!

Search the interwebs log enough and you'll find what you're looking for. Found a vendor on Amazon that had a few cans left. Had to pay extra for shipping but got what I need coming. There's still a few remaining if anyone else is looking.

Thats great you got what you needed. I may order some for future use. How many cans would you suggest for grilles and tail light lenses on a 72 442? And does it seem to keep well long-term sitting on a shelf (if you know)? Thanks,
John

I'd say get 2 cans if you're going to do both grilles and all taillights. As for shelf life, like any other paint, with dry cool storage and occasional shaking it'll last a while.
