Convert 70 Cutlass core support to fit 72
#3
There are some major differences between the two. The most obvious are that the top plate that spans between the fenders is completely different each year (70, 71, and 72). The 71-72 plates are shaped differently from the 70 plate and the 72 plate has "notches" to clear the turned in ends of the grills (see below). The hole for the secondary hood latch is on the driver side for 1970 and is on the passenger side for 71-72. Finally, the panels that the head light brackets mount to are stepped on the 1970 core support and are flat on the 71-72 supports.

The ads stating that the repop unit works for 71 and 72 is flat out wrong. Modifying a 70 to work in 71/72 is a pretty major task.
As Joe noted, 71/72 are very interchangable, but depends on which grills you want to run. If you use 72 Supreme grills then you must use a 72 core support top plate.
Decent units pop up from time to time - post a parts wanted ad. I ended up making one good unit out of two OK ones. One didn't have any battery deterioration, which is rare, but had been in a wreck and was all bent up. The other had lots of acid damage, but the top plate was straight as an arrow.
