Best way to remove ID tag inside door-64 F-85

Guys on my 64 F-85 I need to remove the ID tag inside the door for paint. What is the best way to remove it without destroying it and on the install is there a particular rivet used so it looks like Olds put on there as new?

I just drilled the rivets and then riveted it back on when I was done. No problems. The rivets in mine looked like regular pop rivets. I have seen some with those funny star shaped ones though. I'm sure you could buy a couple online if you just have to have the original style rivets.

R + R'ing that tag is illegal in most states, and can get you jail time!
Might check with the S.O.S. police before drilling!!

Good point. As far as I know, it's not illegal in for me (in GA). But no one ever looks at our cars here unless there is some reason for them to suspect fraud or theft. We just show up at the tag office with proof of insurance and done. Don't even need to have the car there. Nor do we need a title or even a bill of sale for cars over 25 years old.

Unless I had a cop hanging around my shop that I thought might bust me for taking my VIN tag off, I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you remove it clean and install it back properly before it goes back out into the world, I wouldn't think there would be a problem. But if you have thorough inspections in your state, you might seek out advice from someone who has experience with this in your area. Here in the south, they're pretty laid back when it comes to our classic rides.

30 or 35 years ago I worked with a guy that somehow removed those, saving the head and reinstalled them. Saw the same fellow hot wire a Chevy by pulling the dipstick, bending it just right, sticking it down to the starter and jumping the solenoid from under the hood. Talented guy. Don't know if he is alive, dead or in jail now. Best road mechanic I ever knew.
