Air cleaner housing restoration

Thinking of having my air cleaner housing sandblasted and powder coated. Any thoughts before I do so?

Thanks

If you're doing a concours restoration you'll probably get a closer color match with paint from SEM. Be aware that if there are any factory stickers on the side of your air cleaner they aren't all reproduced.

Just be sure they use the correct material to blast the air cleaner like glass beeds so it is not pitted. Sounds like a good idea but won't be cheap.

There is a sticker but painted over previously. It is not concourse but I want it to look original to the 79 H/O. I am not sure if there were any decals that year.

I am thinking, due to the thin metal of the snorkel the bead blasting would be the way to go. I had my 14 inch rally wheels sandblasted and powder coated all 4 for $253. I do bodywork for a living and can't mix the paint for $253!!! That's why I thought the powder coat would be the way to go in a semi gloss. I have determined it down except for the ac thermal vacuum actuator. It works and is original with resistance welds on the bracket. If I remove it the replacements are screw on. I thought about masking the nipple and blocking both ends of the snorkel to prevent any intrusion. To do it right, I think I need to remove the ac thermal and replace it. I would lose originality though... Her is a picture of my wheels.

What you may discover is that when you install a fresh spiffy air cleaner, it can make everything else under the hood look dingy.

Yeah, that slippery slope has turned into more than one body-off resto...

That's what I am afraid of. Once I start there's no turning back!

I am sliding down the slippery slope. So when I dropped the cleaner off at the powder coat shop the tech said "What color did you go with". I said, the "20 gloss black" he said " oh, kinda like a dingy black". I laughed and thought of your post! Best part was they blasted, epoxy primed and powder coated it for a whopping $31.80!!

Good look. And the surrounding engine bay looks pretty good too. Did you do some additional cleanup?

Thank you. Actually I didn't. I took the photo when it was dark with just the garage lights on.!

Very happy. The cost was outstanding. I don't know how they did it so reasonably. Now I'm trying to determine if it had any decals for the '79 Hurst 350R. You know, the air filter sticker... Thanks!

Fusick Automotive is the only company I know of that reproduces air cleaner stickers.

https://www.fusickautomotiveproducts.com/

Good luck. 👍

Mark Cornea has them also (that may actually be where Fusick gets them).

Here is another vendor you may be inclined to check out. https://www.drdecal.com

This gentleman has tons of decals and stickers. Worth checking out. He sets up camp about 12 miles from me. I got this sticker (see pic) from him per my request for the air cleaner. The air cleaner part number is correct for my application but I do not think the engine identification is. I also got an emissions label from him to mirror the '79 350R Hurst motor.

Hope this helps expand you horizons!

As far as I recall, the lid had no decal on it. I'm trying to remember if it had a "keep your GM vehicle all GM" decal on the side of it, though. If it's there, it's likely on the HVAC evaporator side of the air cleaner since there's not much room to put it anywhere else.

The OP's lid has a decal that's been painted over. The 1979 H/Os I see on line (yeah, I realize that's to be taken with a grain of salt) all have decals (some painted over like the one on the OP's car).

He said the decal on the side was painted over. I'm pretty sure they don't all have decals on the top. The examples you show are both different, so at least one of them must be wrong. If anything, the top decal without the "rocket" designator is likely more correct, if there is one. But while I can't be postive, I'm pretty sure I've seen low-mile cars without a lid decal, thinking it may have just peeled off or something. And look closer, there's some sort of weird little ridges on the top outlining where that lid decal might go if there was one. I mean, even on the blasted and powdercoated one that 70RocketSteve got back surely didn't get his decal powdercoated over. That's made right into the air cleaner lid.

Maybe there's a 79 H/O expert out there that can 'splain things better so we all get a bit more info on this.

There's an emission decal of OH, I believe it is, but I still haven't found the correct code for the air cleaner decal, again, if there is one. If anyone has an original one, I'd love to know what the code is.

From Post #1 in this thread. Note the painted over decal on the lid.

From post #20. Those are ridges. Ruffles aren't the only thing that has ridges.

Note the before and after pic. So that decal is still there after powdercoating?
