Can someone tell me the right paint color to paint the Headlight Mounts and headlight cups - like below? Any tips in restoring them too? Thx.

 

Flat (actually medium-flat) black, just like the rest of the core support.

They should be invisible.

Bead blast them, light coat of primer and paint them black. Here are a few photos of ones I did for a 69 442 and the paint I used. It's a very nice match to the original finish. I also used silver to paint the little rivets on the headlight side.

Is this the same color to paint the Radiator support core like Eric says?
I got the core at the blasters now, and the rest of the stuff, boxes full
going to blaster in the next few weeks.

Any reccomendations on what primer to use ?
On my axle tubes, I used Rustoleum rust inhibitor self etching primer followed up with Auto Black Gloss. Came out awesome.
Let it cured for 2 weeks

Options:
Filler primer
Sandable Primer
Primer \ sealer
Self etching Primer
Rusty metal primer
Auto Spray Primer

If it's been blasted clean, any high-quality automotive primer should be fine.

Unless you're going to obsessively wet sand parts that nobody sees, a primer-surfacer or primer-filler is probably overkill.
A primer-sealer is not necessary if you will be covering with a good topcoat within a day or two

Thanks again Eric. Rad core is going to be sitting awhile after I prime it. Since the core has some imperfections in it at different spots due to corrosion, I'm going to hit with some filler primer first. At least this will keep it from flashing. Just did the little center section. Now for the main support.

 

If it's going to sit a while before final painting, be sure to use a primer-sealer on top, then.

On the other hand remember that the factory used no primer, and basically hosed on some paint to more or less cover it, expecting it to start rusting within a year or two

Sorry JCMC64. I meant to respond to this a few days ago and I forgot all about it.

The finish I showed did not have any clear, just the paint from the can.

As for your radiator support, do you have a compressor and spray gun or are you trying to work with spray cans? If you have a compressor and spray gun, I would spray the blasted support in epoxy primer as that will seal it very well and give a nice base for further priming. Let the epoxy dry and put it away until you are ready to use the primer filler. You'll need to sand the epoxy before spraying filler primer but you would need to do that if you used anything else too. It really depends on what equipment you have and how much you want to spend. I only use the Krylon for spraying smaller parts and on something like a radiator support, I used a spray gun and black urethane paint with a flattening agent to reduce the gloss. The result is almost the same sheen as the Krylon.

Thx for the input. In between waiting for the responses, I did more digging and found allot info on Epoxy primers out there, seems lot of people like them. It sounds like the right primer for Rad Cores for sure.

I had to prime it quickly so it wouldnt flash on me, so I just used some filler primer that I had enough of already. So at least its protected for now. Going to be a little while still before I finish core and put it back on frame.

In the meantime had first batch of littlier parts to prime too. Got to figure out what colors for all of them.
