Another color choice thread black or not?

Just got an Estimate for paint so i have to decide on color.
I know its up to me in the end but would like to hear comments.
Do i do the Orig code#19 Black? or Maybe Viking Blue with white Hood stripes no W30 stripes down the side.
Yay or nay!

Since black is the original color and it is a desirable color that would be my vote. It’s your car though, I think the blue would look awesome with the black pin stripes and I doubt that would hurt much on resell since it is also a very desirable color combo.

I'm not a huge fan of black, but an original black car - I'd have to paint it "BLACK",
not many black cars out there - to the point that "BLACK" became "SPECIAL ORDER" on an Oldsmobile A-body for '72

Black is beautiful, but it is a beotch to keep clean. I've owned 2 black cars, and I won't again. That viking blue looks awsome on that car.

You might want to wait to decide once the body work is done. The painter should have no problem getting whatever paint you want in a day or two once the car is ready. Once the whole car has been primed and blocked for the final time, go over and look at it. The best way I have found to see what the car will look like is to wipe the car down with prepsol after it has been blocked or wet sanded with at least 400. (You could wet sand the car now to get an idea of how straight it is before you send it to be painted) At that point you can get a good idea of how straight the car is. I agree that either black or blue will look great on the car, but as I am sure you know, the black will show every wave and dip from a mile away. Randy is correct that black is hard to keep clean. Not only will it show any dirt that gets on it, but you have to be really carful with how you clean it as it will also show swirl marks much easier. That said, I am currently building a 67 Camaro convertible that I will be painting black. I also have about two years in the metal work and body work at this point. Just my thoughts.

The more I think about it the less I want it to be black for that very reason.
I have had black cars before and let me tell you as soon as you’re done washing the back of the car you got to go back and wash the front again I’m probably going to go with Viking blue I was also thinking about rally red 1970 That would show everything too but not as bad as black

Do you know if your painter plans to simply scuff and shoot the car, or will he prime and block out the car multiple times to be sure it is straight?

Honestly. I think the car will look great whatever color you choose. 71-72 is my favorite body style 442 and there are not many colors that will make the car look bad. Here is a 71 S that my brother an I did in orange about 12 years ago.

I guess I would want to determine the goal you are trying to complete. Correct car, with original color, a car that meets your artistic desires or a reproduction of something you have seen before.

If he has to do jambs as well, then any color would be okay. But if he isn't planning on jambs and they are still black, then black would be easiest. How about a color from another line, like a Toronado only color, or a Cadillac color? Just to be different.

Good eye, they were Buick wheels that I mounted and olds center cap in. I don't think I have any pics of the car when it was completely finished.

Who is paying for the paint job? That's who gets to decide the color. But if I were paying for it, I'd do the blue with black stripes. JMO.

Don't do double stripes on the sides, that was a 70 thing. 71/72 non-W-30 442s used the triple side stripe so that's where I'd go with that. Just a suggestion.
